Durga Khote is a Bollywood actress who was one of the first leading actresses of her time. She had a career span of over 50 years and acted in over 200 films. At the age of 26, Durga Khote became a widow and had two children. To support her family, she decided to work in the film industry. She made her debut in Bollywood with the 1931 silent film Farebi Jaal, produced by Prabhat Film Company. She has appeared in films like Pratibha (1937), Maharathi (1944), Singaar (1949), Mirza Ghalib (1954), Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Anand (1971), Bobby (1973), Bidaai (1974) and Karz (1980). The government of India awarded her Padma Shri in 1968 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1983 for her contributions to Indian cinema.
