Leela Chitnis was an Indian actress who had a career span of over five decades. She started her acting career in Bollywood with the 1935 film Shri Satyanarayan. She mostly starred as a romantic leading lady in the movies and later appeared in character roles of virtuous motherly figures. She left her mark with the movies like Gentleman Daku (1937), Kangan (1939), Azad (1940), Bandhan (1940), Jhoola (1941), Shaheed (1948), Awaara (1951), Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Guide (1965). She married a communist leader Dr. Gajanan Yeshwant Chitnis when she was around 15 or 16 and the couple had four children.
