Mehtab, born Najma Khan, was an Indian actress who started her career in the late 1920s. She was the daughter of Nawab of Sachin, Gujarat. She started her career with a small role in Second Wife (1928) and appeared in several character roles before appearing as the leading lady in movies like Veer Kunal (1932), Qaidi (1940), Kanoon (1943), Shama (1946), Jhansi Ki Rani (1953), and Samay Bada Balwan (1969). She married actor Ashraf Khan and the two had a son named Ismail Khan. However, they got separated and in 1946, she married actor-director Sohrab Modi with whom she had one child named Mehelli.
