Sandhya Mukherjee was a veteran playback singer and composer who primarily worked in Bengali as well as Hindi films. Born in 1931, Dhakuria, Kolkata, she started to learn music at a very young age and so got her first break as a playback singer in 1948 in the Bengali film Samapika. The same year she also sang for Hindi films like Anjaan Garh and Sabya Sachi and went on to sing for many legendary Bollywood composers like R.C. Boral, S.D. Burman, Naushad, Roshan, Madan Mohan, and Salil Chaudhury. Her duets with singer and composer Hemant Mukherjee during the 60s and 70s became very famous. Some of her unforgettable songs were for Hindi films like Sazaa, Tarana, Izzat, Baaghi, Fareb, Jaagte Raho, Mamta, etc. Considered one of the sweetest voices in Bengali music, she was a recipient of many popular music awards. The veteran singer who was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata in January breathed her last on 15 February 2022 following a massive cardiac arrest. She is survived by her daughter.
