Tarun Majumdar was a well-known director, writer and lyricist who worked primarily in Bengali and Hindi language cinemas. He initially went with the screen name Yatrik when he made his directorial debut with the Bengali film Chaowa Pawa (1959). Some of his popular directorial ventures in Bengali were Palatak (1963), Nimantran (1971), Kuheli (1971), Shriman Prithviraj (1973), Fuleswari (1974), Sansar Simante (1975), Ganadevata (1978), Dadar Kirti (1980), Bhalobasa Bhalobasa (1985) and Apan Amar Apan (1990). He also directed two films in Hindi which were Rahgir (1969) and Balika Badhu (1976) which was a remake of his Bengali hit film. He was a recipient of four National Film Awards while he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1990.
