Bawaal is a tale set in Lucknow that revolves around Ajay Dixit (Varun Dhawan) aka Ajju bhaiya who is a history teacher and believes in establishing a fake public image for himself and holds it very dear to himself. Ajay meets Nisha (Janhvi Kapoor), a young girl who he thinks can further help in enhancing his image. As they court each other they realise they have nothing in common but go ahead and get married. Things change during their honeymoon in Europe where Ajay tries to impart his worldly wisdom to Nisha, acting overconfident and attempting to shape her according to his vision as their relationship turns a bit sour. However, the narrative takes a dark turn when the couple arrives in Germany and embarks on a World War 2 trail where he gets to understand the history of the holocaust only to discover the war within him.
