Gangubai Kathiawadi is a biopic based on the book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ written by S. Hussain Zaidi. The story is that of a simple girl named Ganga Harjivandas (Alia Bhatt) who was born into an affluent family in Kathiawad and aspires to become an actress. At the age of 16, she fell in love and eloped to Mumbai to marry her father’s accountant. Instead of starting a new chapter in her life things take a u-turn as she finds herself with no choice but to embrace the ways of destiny where she is forcefully made to become a prostitute. In no time she learns the tricks of the trade and soon marks her own territory and becomes Gangubai - The Matriarch of Kamathipura. Gangubai is later helped by her sworn brother, a local don named Rahim Lala (Ajay Devgn) who not only saves her from the goons but also makes her win the elections in her area and advocate for women's rights. Thus, starts the journey of Gangubai Kathiawadi who becomes the voice for women empowerment.
