A remake of the 2004 Tamil hit film 7G Rainbow Colony, Malaal is a romantic drama about Shiva (Meezaan Jafri) and Astha (Sharmin Segal) who belong to two very different backgrounds but stay in the same chawl. While Shiva is a hardcore Marathi manus Astha is liberal and believes in equality. Despite differences, they fall in love with one another but not before fate plays spoilsport. How the two react to these situations and whether or not their love finds its destination forms the remaining part of this engaging story.
