Srinagar is a story based on true events that took place in the state of Kashmir's capital, Srinagar in 1989 when Kashmiri Hindu Pandits living in the valley were forced to flee due to Islamist insurgents. A black chapter in the history of India marks the atrocities and killings that they faced during the insurgency. Of the approximately 300,000 to 600,000 Hindus living in the Kashmir Valley in 1990, only 2,000–3,000 remain there as the era continues to be widely remembered by Kashmiri Hindus as the tragic “exodus day” of being forced out of Kashmir.
