12 Bollywood Flicks Which Were Inspired By NDA Govt. Initiatives

Ever since the Narendra Modi led, NDA government came into power in 2014 and re-elected in 2019, quite a few bold and necessary initiatives have been introduced and implemented for the welfare of the people. Some initiatives have gone down well while some faced stiff opposition, flak and protests from within as well as external forces. However, a huge majority of Indians expect and believe that these actions have led to the emergence of a ‘New India’, which has not only helped eliminate the socio-economic backwardness but also growth and development. Some may call it schemes while some may call it policies, but our Bollywood filmmakers have always been inspired by these initiatives and made them into movie scripts that have been commendable. Some flicks went noticed at the box-office while some sank without a trace due to a lackluster script or promotion or star power. Nevertheless, here is a list of Bollywood flicks, which were based upon some of the decisions, initiatives or actions taken and executed by the NDA government in the last few years.
1. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020) – Invalidation of Section 377 (LGBT Legalisation)
The invalidation part of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which makes homosexuality legal in India, had come as a huge relief to the LGBT community in India. Though many films on the subject of LGBT have been made in the past but taking a cue from the supreme court’s decision passed in 2018, quite a few big filmmakers have made films based on homosexuality the latest being the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Sonam Kapoor’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and Sheer Qorma in 2020.
2. Mudda 370 J & K (2019) - Abrogation of Article 370
The scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution, which provided a special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, was seen as a huge step taken by the NDA government in 2019. The state of J&K was bifurcated into J&K and Ladakh union territories and was given equal status to that of other Indian states. Movies like Mudda 370 J&K (2019) and Srinagar (2020) were based on the abolishing of article 370 and how the people of Kashmir reacted and affected them.
3. Mission Mangal (2019) - Mars Orbiter Mission
This Akshay Kumar film based on the successful launch of the Mangalyan project, which took place in 2014, was one of the major successes of India’s aerospace mission. Mission Mangal narrates the story of the scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation who contributed to the success of the Mars Orbiter Mission in record time, which not only marked India's first interplanetary expedition but also launched in the most cost-effective manner. The presence of Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kirti Kulhari and others displayed women's power who have been an integral part of India’s growth.
4. Phir Ussi Mod Par Talaq (2019) - Triple Talaq Bill
Swan song of director Lekh Tandon, Phir Ussi Mod Par Talaq and Talaaq???: Code Blue were films based on the 'Triple Talaq' bill initiated by the NDA government towards social justice. The Modi government who had introduced the bill in the house for banning 'Triple Talaq' in the Muslim community received applause from all corners. The bill, which helps protect the marital rights of Muslim women in India, was long pending and has come as a sigh of relief to the same who were abandoned by their husbands.
5. URI: The Surgical Strike (2019) - Surgical Strike
This may not exactly qualify as an initiative but surely can be considered as an action or reply initiated by the NDA govt. and carried out by the armed forces. The Uri attack was India’s retaliation to the terrorist camps in the neighbouring country that carried out the Uri sector attack in India. Though, a dramatized version of the operation, the depiction and characters looked very real along with the war scenes which were instrumental in the success of the film. Vicky Kaushal’s performance helped him earn a National Award the same year. This war flick for sure would rank among the top 10 Hindi films inspired by real-life incidents in Bollywood.
6. Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018) - Digitalization of Rural Electrification
Many may not know but the stealing of electricity and tampering of meters in rural India is a common phenomenon. The rural electrification gained momentum under the Modi government while many villages were connected to the electricity grid. The digitalization of the power system in India has led to the stoppage of inflated electricity bills to many of its consumers, which formed the main premise of Shahid Kapoor’s Batti Gul Meter Chalu.
7. Sui Dhaaga: Made in India (2018) - Make in India
The NDA govt.’s most dynamic initiative 'Make in India' project concept was launched to attract global investment in India. Sarat Katariya’s Sui Dhaaga starring Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma was based on the same concept where the lead pair start their own clothing brand without relying on its promoters. The movie was received well at the box-office while the scheme served as a shot in the arm for the government.
8. Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran (2018) - India’s Nuclear Test
If at all there was a film that would easily qualify in the top 10 Bollywood movies inspired by real-life events it would be Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran which may have come to a tad late but not many know that Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s NDA government had carried out the unexpected after the threat it received from its neighbour. It was a story, which had to be told which was beautifully executed in the film with John Abraham leading the team. India going nuclear was a historical achievement, which was underplayed but finally got its due recognition through Bollywood storytelling.
9. Note Pe Chot At 8/11 (2018) – Demonetization
This lesser-known comedy social satire was based on the demonetization that took place in November 2016, under the NDA government. The film’s story portrayed the impact that demonetization had on people and how the rich had to run helter-skelter with their black money. However, there were many objections and opposition to it but the initiation is expected to do a lot of good to the economy in the long run.
10. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017) - Sanitation Conditions (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan)
Another initiative made under the NDA govt.’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan emphasized upon clean India and the building of toilets for women in rural areas who had to walk miles every day to relieve themselves. Directed by Shree Narayan Singh, this Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar starrer did good business at the box-office as well. Other movies like Halka (2018) and Mere Pyare Prime Minister (2019) too had dealt with the same initiative.
11. Half Girlfriend (2017) - Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao
Though not totally based on the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' initiative but the Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Half Girlfriend does mention PM Narendra Modi’s initiative of the same in the film’s climax. The 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojna' has been given a lot of importance, especially in the northern states of India. Half Girlfriend was based on Chetan Bhagat’s book by the same title and did decent business at the box office.
12. Commando 2 (2017) – Black Money Trail
Vidyut Jamwal’s action thriller Commando 2 revolved around how black money is transferred through hawala and illegal means to foreign countries from India due to which the government coffers drying up. The whole idea was based on the scheme initiated by the NDA government on how to get back unaccounted money to the country, which has been used and circulated illegally around the world.
