Ever imagined how our Bollywood movies would have been without villains or baddies who always made life difficult for our heroes and heroines. The villains were the cause for the hero to become a hero, who could take revenge and display his bravado to give the story a happy ending. Our Bollywood actors who portrayed negative or villainous characters on-screen are often mistaken as genuinely bad people in real life or off-screen. But in reality, they are as good as anyone, many with a heart of gold and very humble. These villains may have played dirty with the heroines on-screen but some managed to impress them in real life and went on to tie the nuptial knot. Let’s surprise ourselves by looking at some on-screen villains who married Bollywood actresses in real life.
1. Prem Nath – Bina Rai
Actor-director Prem Nath who started off his career by playing lead roles switched to negative characters in the late 60s and thereafter. His notable films where he played the antagonist were Aan (1952), Teesri Manzil (1966), Johny Mera Naam (1970), Tere Mere Sapne (1971), Raja Jani (1972), Loafer (1973), Amir Garib (1974), Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye (1974) and many others. He fell in love and got married in 1952 to actress Bina Rai during the making of Aurat which released in 1953. Bina is remembered for films like Anarkali (1953), Ghunghat (1960) and Taj Mahal (1963). The star couple had two sons actor Prem Krishen and Kailash Nath (Monty).
2. Shakti Kapoor – Shivangi Kapoor
Rated as one of the top Bollywood villains of all time, Shakti Kapoor made his acting debut in 1977 in the Dharmendra & Hema Malini starrer Khel Khilari Ka and thereafter featured in over 500 films by playing the baddie in most of them. Some of his memorable villainous roles have been in films like Qurbani, Rocky, Himmatwala, Tohfa, Sultanat, Raja Babu, Andaz Apna Apna, etc. He met and fell in love with actress Shivangi Kolhapure (elder sister of actress Padmini & Tejaswini Kolhapure) during the making of Kismat in 1980. Despite facing opposition from their families, they eloped and got married in 1982 and thereafter had son actor Siddhanth Kapoor and daughter actress Shraddha Kapoor.
3. Mazhar Khan – Zeenat Aman
Former Miss India and Miss Asia Pacific International, Bollywood’s diva Zeenat Aman needs no introduction to movie buffs of the 70s and 80s. Rated as one of the top and highest-paid actresses then, Zeenat Aman played the leading lady in many big films like Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Dharam Veer, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Don, Dostana, Qurbani, etc. She married actor-director Mazhar Khan in 1985 who had played the villain in many films such as Ghulami, Bhavani Junction, Wanted, Ek Hi Bhool, Tajurba, Angaar, etc., and directed Gang which released after his death in 2000. The couple has two sons and reportedly did not have a pleasant married life while Zeenat often complained of being a victim of domestic violence.
4. Aditya Pancholi – Zarina Wahab
Aditya Pancholi who started his acting career in the 80s by doing TV & Video films made his Bollywood debut in director Bappi Sonie’s Sasti Dulhan Mehenga Dulha in 1986. Known for playing negative characters than lead roles in films like Dharamyudh, Maha-Sangram, Awwal Number, Khilona, Yes Boss, Hameshaa, Dum Maaro Dum, Bodyguard, Aditya has been involved in controversies right through his career. He met Zarina Wahab, who was already an established actress in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films, during the making of TV film Kalank Ka Tika and got married in 1986. Zarina who is older than Aditya had already appeared in successful films like Chitchor, Gharaonda, Sawan Ko Aane Do, My Name Is Khan, etc.
5. Paresh Rawal – Swaroop Sampat
Remembered sometime back as one of the top 10 Hindi movie villains of Bollywood, Paresh Rawal portrayed some of the most menacing and dreaded on-screen villain characters. He started his acting career by appearing in cameos in films like Holi and Lorie in 1984. He was noticed for playing the baddie in Arjun, Samundar, Naam, Dacait, Kabzaa, Ram Lakhan, Yodha, Jigar, Andaz Apna Apna, Baazi, and many others. Later he graduated to supporting and comic roles. He married former Miss India 1979 and actress Swaroop Sampat in 1987, who has acted in films like Naram Garam, Sawaal, Bahu Ki Awaaz, Ki & Ka, and Uri: The Surgical Strike and TV serials – Yeh Jo hai Zindagi, All The Best & Shanti. The couple has two sons, Aditya and Anirudh.
6. Imtiaz Khan – Krutika Desai
Actor-director Imtiaz Khan who is well known for his on-screen negative roles in films like Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Zakhmee, Dharmatma, Darwaza, Gang, etc. married TV and film actress Kruttika Desai in the 90s. Kruttika who is remembered for her role in Ramesh Sippy’s TV serial Buniyad did a handful of films like Insaaf, Dastak and Section 375. Despite having a huge age gap, the two led a good life along with their daughter Ayesha Khan till Imtiaz passed away in 2020. Imtiaz Khan who directed Pyaara Dost in 1982 was the brother of late actor Amjad Khan and son of veteran actor Jayant.
7. Parmeet Sethi – Archana Puran Singh
Actor turned director Parmeet Sethi who made his debut in Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995 and also played the baddie in movies such as Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Dhadkan, Om Jai Jagadish, Lakshya and Rustom married film and television actress Archana Puran Singh on 30 June 1992. Archana who was already an established actress since appearing in films like Jalwa, Agneepath, Raja Hindustani, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Kick, etc. fell in love with Parmeet while the latter was still struggling to get a break in films. The couple has two sons Aaryamann and Ayushmaan.
8. Mohnish Bahl – Ektaa
Son of yesteryear actress Nutan, Mohnish Bahl made his acting debut in 1983 in the Sanjay Dutt starrer Bekaraar. He later played the lead in a few films like Purana Mandir and Teri Baahon Mein before taking up villainous characters in many movies including Maine Pyar Kiya, Deewana, Shola Aur Shabnam, Raja Hindustani, Dulhe Raja, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, etc. Mohnish married actress Ektaa (Ektaa Sohini) in 1992 who made her debut in Dev Anand’s Awwal Number in 1990 and followed it up with films such as Fateh, Saajan, Vansh, Tahalka, Hafta Bandh and Vaastav. They both have two daughters named Pranutan Bahl and Krishaa Bahl. Pranutan is an actress who made her debut in Notebook in 2019.
9. Ashutosh Rana – Renuka Shahane
Still remembered as the presenter of DD show Surabhi in the 90s, Renuka Shahane was a household name who made her acting debut in TV serials and Marathi films before getting her big break in Sooraj Barjatya’s blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! in 1994. This was followed by films like Masoom, Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa and Highway. Actor Ashutosh Rana who is known for playing intense negative characters in films such as Dushman, Zakhm, Sangharsh, Haasil, Awarapan, Mulk and Dhadak got married to Renuka Shahane in 2001 after courting her for two years. The couple has two sons, namely Shauryaman Neekhra and Satyendra Neekhra.
10. Manoj Bajpayee – Neha
Manoj Bajpayee who played Bhiku Mhatre in Ram Gopal Varma's Satya is remembered as one of the top 10 iconic villains characters in Bollywood. Manoj who debuted in Govind Nihalani’s Drohkaal with a cameo in 1994 went on to do some lead roles as well as negative roles in Daud, Satya, Road, Raajneeti, Gangs of Wasseypur, Tevar, Baaghi 2, is married to actress Neha. Neha had a brief career by appearing as the female lead in films like Kareeb, Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet, Fiza, Rahul, etc. Manoj who had divorced his first wife earlier knew Neha before she made her debut in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Kareeb in 1998. The couple got married in 2006 and have a daughter named Awa Nailah.
11. Kay Kay Menon – Nivedita Bhattacharya
Kay Kay Menon who is more known for his on-screen negative roles than positive roles in films like A Flying Jatt, Singh Is Bliing, Baby, Drona, ABCD, Sarkar, etc. is married to Bollywood actress Nivedita Bhattacharya who featured in films like Kya Kehna, Darr @ The Mall, Phobia, Aiyaary and Chicken Curry Law. Nivedita was also seen playing a vamp in TV serials like Saat Phere, Saloni Ka Safar, Koi Laut Ke Aaya Hai and others. It is believed that they both met during their theatre production days in Mumbai where Kay Kay got his first break opposite Naseeruddin Shah in Feroz Abbas Khan’s play Mahatma vs Gandhi. After getting a break in films Kay Kay and Nivedita tied the knot.
12. Nawab Shah - Pooja Batra
Pooja Batra, the former Miss India made her acting debut in Bollywood in 1997 and appeared in films like Virasat, Vishwavidhaata, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Nayak, Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaye, etc. She got married to a US-based orthopedic surgeon Dr. Sonu Ahluwalia in 2002 and divorced him in 2011. She later married Bollywood actor Nawab Shah who is known for playing villainous characters in films like Kudrat, Kartoos, Don 2, Dilwale, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Khuda Haafiz, etc. The two got married in Delhi in 2019 according to Arya Samaj traditions.
13. Mahesh Anand - Madhu Malhotra / Usha Bachani
Actor Mahesh Anand played the baddie in many films like Bhavani Junction, Shahenshah, Kabzaa, Toofan, Akayla, Coolie No.1 and Lal Baadshah, was married to actress Madhu Malhotra who appeared in small supporting roles in films like Karz, Vidhaata, Satte Pe Satta and Yudh. After five years of marriage, they divorced as Mahesh went on to marry another supporting actress named Usha Bachani in 2000 who featured in movies like Taal, Deewane, Raju Chacha, Fashion and Beiimaan Love. In all, the actor who was found dead in his apartment in Mumbai in 2019, had married five times which included actress Reena Roy’s sister Barkha Roy who gave him a break in the movie Sanam Teri Kasam in 1982.
14. Ranjeet - Aaloka Bedi
Veteran actor, producer, and director Ranjeet, who is rated among the top 10 Bollywood villains of all time have worked in over 200 films as the baddie had married the lesser-known actress Aaloka Bedi in 1986 who was the niece of actress Mumtaz. Ranjeet who made his acting debut in Mohan Sehgal’s Sawan Bhadon in 1970 was already an established villain in Bollywood for appearing in films like Sharmeelee (1971), Keemat (1973), Haath Ki Safai (1974), 36 Ghante (1974), Khoon Pasina (1977), Duniya Meri Jeb Mein (1979), Rocky (1981), Laawaris (1981), etc. Aaloka made her acting debut opposite Puneet Issar in Raja Aur Rana (1984) and did films like Haveli (1985) and Dak Bangla (1987). The couple has two children, Chiranjeev and Divyanka.
15. Dan Dhanoa - Nikii Waalia / Nandita Puri
Dan Dhanoa was a well-known Bollywood villain of the 80s and 90s who made his acting debut in Manmohan Desai’s Amitabh Bachchan starrer Mard in 1985. The success of Mard got him to play the baddie in popular films like Karma, Dacait, Tridev, Sanam Bewafa, Phool Aur Kaante, Vishwatma, Ajay, etc. He was married to actress Nikii Waalia who appeared in films like Cobra (1980), Fiffty Fiffty (1981), Kaalia (1981), and Karate (1983). They got married in 1986 and divorced in 2005 and had a son. Dan Dhanoa later married classical dancer and actress Nandita Puri in 2007 who appeared in TV serials like Aashirwad, Sarhadein, Kalash, Sanjivani – A Medical Boon, Maayka – Saath Zindagi Bhar Ka, etc. She also acted in films like Madhoshi, Life Express, Not A Love Story, Sehar, etc.
