Cameos and guest appearances have been a part of Bollywood films since the 40s when notable stars came in a ‘blink and a miss’ appearance which mostly went unnoticed by audiences. Slowly and steadily, cameos by real-life stars started to gather momentum and a few filmmakers thought of it as an added attraction for their films. Getting some of Bollywood’s real-life stars together on screen in one frame is no mean feat that has been achieved by a few filmmakers. There have been a handful of Bollywood films, which had a hoard of celebrity stars making guest appearances in a scene or a song. 1. Kala Bazar (1960)

Director Vijay Anand’s Kala Bazar probably features among the first Bollywood movies with multiple cameos. The audiences got to see a hoard of real-life Bollywood stars attending the premiere of Mehboob Khan’s Mother India in the film. Dev Anand who plays a black marketeer in the film is shown selling the film’s tickets outside the theatre where the real-life premiere footage of the film Mother India was inserted, thereby serving as an added attraction for fans which showed the likes of Dilip Kumar, Nargis, Guru Dutt, Geeta Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Sohrab Modi, Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and many more stars.

Come to think of Bollywood films with multiple cameo appearances by stars then who can forget Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Jaya Bhaduri starrer Guddi? Guddi had some memorable cameos by then-Bollywood stars including Amitabh Bachchan’s shot from Parwana and Rajesh Khanna's from Anand. The movie was about a teenage girl Guddi (played by Jaya Bhaduri) who is infatuated with real-life film star Dharmendra. Besides Dharmendra playing himself in the film a whole lot of star cameos one got to see in the form of Pran, Vinod Khanna, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Mala Sinha, Biswajeet, Om Prakash, and others.

Comedian turned director Asrani’s Chala Murari Hero Banne also features among Bollywood films with multiple cameos by real-life stars. The story of the movie revolved around a struggling actor named Murari (played by Asrani) who makes it big as a Bollywood actor and is shown performing alongside a whole lot of actors during film shoots. The multiple cameos comprised of actors like Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Premnath, Amitabh Bachchan, Ashok Kumar, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Sunil Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Nasir Hussain, Helen, etc.

If there was a list of the top 10 Bollywood films with multiple cameo appearances then Manmohan Desai’s multi-starrer Naseeb could easily qualify for the list. The blockbuster film had a song sung by Mohd. Rafi and lip-synced by Amitabh Bachchan, ‘John Jani Janardhan’ that saw Bollywood stars attending the Golden Jubilee celebration of Dharam-Veer movie. The song had cameo appearances by many Bollywood actors playing themselves including Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Rakesh Roshan, Vijay Arora, Waheeda Rehman, Sharmila Tagore, Mala Sinha, Bindu, Simi Garewal, Simple Kapadia and Prema Narayan.

Ashutosh Gowariker’s directorial debut Pehla Nasha starring Deepak Tijori, Raveena Tandon, and Pooja Bhatt also boasted of having cameo appearances by real-life Bollywood stars such as Aamir Khan, Rahul Roy, Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, Sudesh Berry, and Saif Ali Khan who are seen gathered at an event in the film. Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Arjun Rampal was based on a reincarnation revenge drama theme that had two cameo appearances. Sajid Khan’s full-fledged directorial debut film Heyy Babyy starring Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, and Vidya Balan, had some of the top actresses of Bollywood grooving to the title song of the film that was ‘Heyy Babyy’.
