Batwara 1947 is a historical period drama set against the turbulent backdrop of India’s Independence in 1947, the story follows Meerut-based Sikandar Mirza (Sunny Deol), who initially celebrates freedom from British rule despite the communal violence sweeping across the country. However, as the situation deteriorates following Independence, Sikandar is forced to leave Meerut and migrate to Lahore with his wife Hamida (Preity G. Zinta), son Javed (Karan Deol), and daughter Tanno (Khhushi Hajare). After a traumatic journey, the family reaches Lahore and finds refuge in a relief camp. Eventually, they are allotted a sprawling haveli named Durga Nivas, giving them hope of rebuilding their lives. Their happiness is short-lived when they discover that an elderly woman (Shabana Azmi), the original owner of the haveli, still occupies the top floor and refuses to leave her ancestral home. Despite Sikandar and his family’s efforts to convince her to migrate to India, she remains determined to stay. What unfolds between the displaced family and the stubborn old woman forms the crux of the film.
