Khandhar is a romantic drama. The movie revolves around a young man named Subhash (Naseeruddin Shah), who works as a photographer and travels to a village to take pictures of old temples and establishments. In the village, he meets a beautiful girl named Jamini (Shabana Azmi), and pretends to be her suitor to take her help in finding the best photography spots. However, eventually Subhash falls in love with Jamini, but the fact that he might have to leave her behind in the village after a while stands as a barrier between the two. Will Subhash finally give up on his thoughts and confess his true feelings to Jamini?
