Love Aaj Kal is a romantic comedy-drama that follows the stories of two couples set in a different time. The modern-day couple, Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone), mutually decide to break up and move on. Jai is convinced by an old man, Veer Singh (Saif Ali Khan/Rishi Kapoor), to not let go of Meera. He explains to him how he fell for a girl named Harleen Kaur (Giselli Monteiro) and never gave up even after several difficulties. Jai agrees to go to Meera, the two spend time together and realize that they still love each other. However, Meera is engaged to someone else and Jai has to return to his job. Jai leaves Meera but neither of them is happy. Will they confess their love and reunite or let go and sacrifice their love? The film intends to show that pure love never changes over time.
