Parineeta is a musical romantic drama. Set in 1962, Kolkata, the movie revolves around two childhood sweethearts Lalita (Vidya Balan) and Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan), who wish to eventually get married. Shekhar’s father, Naveenchandra Roy (Sabyasachi Chakrabarty) is against the relationship as he wants his son to marry Gayatri (Dia Mirza), a rich industrialist’s daughter. Shekhar tries to create misunderstandings between the two lovers. Shekhar’s suspicion grows with the entry of Girish Sharma (Sanjay Dutt), a simple man who provides Lalita much-needed moral support. Shekhar grows jealous of Girish and Lalita’s closeness, and on one occasion embarrasses and humiliates her. Things keep getting worse for the two. Will Shekhar ever be able to see through and understand Lalita, and get back to her?
