It's 2024 and time to go down memory lane and visit the top 10 highest-grossing Bollywood movies of 1999. The year 1999 in Bollywood holds special because it was going through a transformation phase where the then government had categorized it into an industry while the dominance of the three ‘Khan’s continued but not without paving the way for the next generation of actors and actresses. The year also saw bigger budget films in the making with satellite stakes increasing and a whole lot of DVD releases flooding the markets in India and abroad. The then box office success formula genres were – Action, Comedy and Romantic Musicals that raked in the much-needed moolah for the makers. Let’s take a look at the top 10 highest-grossing Bollywood films of 1999 which turn 25 in 2024.


1. Hum Saath-Saath Hain (05 November) (Budget: 17.00 Crores, Domestic: 39.18 Crores, Worldwide: 69.58 Crores)

Rajshri Productions stuck to their age-old formula of family entertainers by giving the directorial reins to Sooraj Barjatya once again with Hum Saath-Saath Hain. Hum Saath-Saath Hain may not have been as big a success as Sooraj’s earlier two outings namely – Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, but grabbed the numero-uno position in the list of top 10 highest grossers of 1999. The film had an ensemble cast of Mohnish Bahl, Tabu, Salman Khan, Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Neelam, Mahesh Thakur, Reema Lagu, Alok Nath, Shakti Kapoor and Sadashiv Amrapurkar.

2. Biwi No.1 (28 May) (Budget: 12.00 Crores, Domestic: 25.58 Crores, Worldwide: 41.64 Crores)

David Dhawan’s Biwi No.1 was produced by Vashu Bhagnani and a remake of Kamal Haasan’s Tamil hit Sathi Leelavathi (1995). The comedy-drama earned the second spot in the list of the top 10 grossers in 1999. Despite being released during the ICC Cricket World Cup, the film became a money-spinner giving a much-needed hit for Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Anil Kapoor and Tabu.

3. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (18 June) (Budget: 16.00 Crores, Domestic: 24.76 Crores, Worldwide: 45.23 Crores)

Sanjay Leela Bhansali was back in the reckoning with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam after the failure of Khamoshi: The Musical in 1996. Starring Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai in the main lead, the romantic musical drama was a love triangle with scintillating music by Ismail Darbar that contributed immensely to the success of the film. Songs like Nimbooda Nimbooda, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Tadap Tadap Ke, Dholi Taro, Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan, etc., remain popular with music lovers to date.

4. Taal (13 August) (Budget: 15.00 Crores, Domestic: 21.50 Crores, Worldwide: 43.86 Crores)

Subhash Ghai’s Taal was yet another musical love triangle drama starring Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Akshaye Khanna in the lead. Taal became the first Bollywood movie to be insured before its release and earned a cool 43.86 crores, worldwide, making it the third highest grosser among 1999 movie box office collections. The movie remains one of A.R. Rahman’s most memorable musical scores to date.

5. Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (22 January) (Budget: 06.25 Crores, Domestic: 17.03 Crores, Worldwide: 31.40 Crores)

Satish Kaushik’s Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain was a remake of the Telugu hit film Pavitra Bandham released in 1996. Released during Republic Day along with Aa Ab Laut Chalen and Hu Tu Tu, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain emerged as one of the surprise box office hits of 1999 thus, becoming the fifth biggest earner of that year. Starring Anil Kapoor, Kajol and Anupam Kher, the romantic family drama opened to mixed-to-positive critical reviews, but by word of mouth, the film fetched in the crowds qualifying it as a hit.

6. Mann (09 July) (Budget: 14.00 Crores, Domestic: 16.65 Crores, Worldwide: 30.23 Crores)

Directed by Indra Kumar, Mann was based on the 1957 American film An Affair To Remember which starred Aamir Khan, Manisha Koirala, Anil Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore and Neeraj Vora with Rani Mukerji in a special appearance. This was Indra Kumar and Aamir Khan’s third collaboration after Dil (1990) and Ishq (1997) but wasn’t as successful as his two earlier outings.

7. Sarfarosh (30 April) (Budget: 08.00 Crores, Domestic: 18.77 Crores, Worldwide: 29.21 Crores)

Director John Mathew Matthan’s cop drama Sarfarosh starring Aamir Khan as a 'no non-sense' tough cop took a while before it got the crowds in. Starring Sonali Bendre, Mukesh Rishi, Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Joshi and Akhilendra Mishra, Sarfarosh is considered one of Aamir Khan’s best patriotic-oriented performances to date. The film went on to grab the seventh spot among the top 10 box office hits of 1999.

8. Baadshah (27 August) (Budget: 11.00 Crores, Domestic: 14.87 Crores, Worldwide: 27.11 Crores)

The combination of Shah Rukh Khan and Abbas–Mustan was back with a bang after Baazigar with the action, suspense, comedy-drama Baadshah in 1999. Produced by United Sevens’ Jain brothers, the film starred Amrish Puri, Twinkle Khanna, Rakhee Gulzar, Sharat Saxena, Deepak Tijori and Johny Lever in the main cast and had some melodious soundtracks by Anu Malik. The film ended up becoming the eighth-highest earner at the box office in 1999.

9. Kachche Dhaage (19 February) (Budget: 10.00 Crores, Domestic: 16.19 Crores, Worldwide: 23.65 Crores)

Milan Luthria’s directorial debut Kachche Dhaage was an action edge-of-the-seat thriller drama starring Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Manisha Koirala and Namrata Shirodkar in the main cast. Produced by Tips Films, Kachche Dhaage was about two step brothers who despite hating each other join hands to crack upon a nexus of criminals operating in Rajasthan. The action flick was placed at the ninth position among 1999 highest-grosser movies.

10. Haseena Maan Jaayegi (25 June) (Budget: 09.00 Crores, Domestic: 15.02 Crores, Worldwide: 22.37 Crores)

Haseena Maan Jaayegi was David Dhawan’s second hit in a row in 1999 after Biwi No.1. This romantic comedy-drama was produced by Smita Thackeray which was a remake of C.V. Sridhar’s 1966 comedy-drama Pyar Kiye Jaa starring Kishore Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Kalpana Mohan, Rajashree, Mumtaz, Mehmood and Om Prakash. Haseena Maan Jaayegi had an ensemble star cast of Sanjay Dutt, Govinda, Karisma Kapoor, Pooja Batra, Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal, Kader Khan and Satish Kaushik who contributed to its success making it one of the top 10 biggest hits of 1999.
