Born to actress Shobhna Samarth and filmmaker Kumar Sen Samarth, Nutan was one of Bollywood's most popular and luminous leading stars of the 50s and 60s, appearing in more than 70 films spread over four decades. Nutan started her acting career as a child artist in her mother's film Hamari Beti in 1950 at the age of 14 and thereafter featured as the female lead in films like Nagina, Laila Majnu, Sujata, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Bandini, Milan, Saudagar and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki. She was credited with the record of holding five Filmfare Best Actress Awards until niece Kajol broke it in 2011. She received the Padma Shri in 1974 and succumbed to cancer in 1991. Her younger sister Tanuja is an actress while her son Mohnish Bahl is an actor.
