Bollywood’s first ever comedienne, Uma Devi Khatri, popularly known as Tun Tun, was a singer and actor-comedian, who was born in a small village in present-day Uttar Pradesh. Her parents died when she was very young, and she spent most of her childhood in poverty. Later, she met an Excise Duty Inspector, Akhtar Abbas Kazi, who helped and inspired her. During the partition, she moved to Bombay to pursue a career in singing, and married Akhtar in 1947. She made her debut in Bollywood as a solo playback singer in Nazir’s Wazim Azra (1946). She has also sung in the movies like Dard (1947), Anokhi Ada (1948), etc. Mostly appearing in comedic roles, Tun Tun has acted in movies like Deedar (1951), Mr. & Mrs. ‘55 (1955), Shree 420 (1955), Jagte Raho (1956), Pyaasa (1957), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Khel Mohabbat Ka (1986), and many more.
