Masaan is a romantic drama that is set in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and follows two separate stories. The first story is of Devi Pathak (Richa Chadda), a trainer at a computer coaching center, who was caught indulging in sexual activities with her student. Since then, she had to switch jobs due to the stigma associated with having pre-marital sex and finally leave the city. The second story concerns Deepak Kumar (Vicky Kaushal), a boy from the Dom community whose family performs cremation of dead bodies. Deepak falls in love with Shaalu Gupta (Shweta Tripathi), a Hindu upper-caste girl. However, Deepak is willing to transcend the restrictions of casteism.
