They say like cricket, politics too has a long and deep association with Bollywood actors and actresses. We’ve often seen actors and actresses using their popularity to join politics to become Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. Only a handful have survived while the rest stated that it’s not their cup of tea. It’s common for Bollywood actresses to marry someone from their own fraternity or businessmen or cricketers but how many can you recall marrying active political leaders in the country? Not many we guess. However, there have been a few instances where Bollywood actresses have married politicians. Don’t believe us, here’s a compilation of top Bollywood actresses who married politicians over the years:
1. Rekha Sahay – Subodh Kant Sahay (1991)
Subodh Kant Sahay, a member of the Indian National Congress, who served as a three-term Lok Sabha M.P. representing the Ranchi constituency of Jharkhand, married lesser-known Bollywood and theatre actress Rekha Sahay in 1991. Rekha Sahay reportedly is one of the first actresses who got married to a politician. She played supporting actress roles in popular films like Hifazat (1987), Aage Mod Hai (1987), Gunahon Ka Faisla (1988), Daayra (1996), etc. She also is remembered for playing Valsamma in Shah Rukh Khan’s TV serial Circus in 1989.
2. Radhika Kumaraswamy – H.D. Kumaraswamy (2006)
Popular Kannada actress Radhika aka Kutty Radhika features among the Indian actresses who married politicians. Known for playing the female lead in Kannada films like Ninagagi, Thavarige Baa Thangi, Auto Shankar, Mandya, Hatavadi, Anatharu, Damayanthi, Radhika married former Chief Minister of Karnataka H.D. Kumaraswamy secretly in 2006 and revealed it only in 2010. It was H.D. Kumaraswamy’s second marriage and the couple has a daughter named Shamika.
3. Ayesha Takia – Farhan Azmi (2009)
Another popular Bollywood actress who got married to a politician is Ayesha Takia. Ayesha Takia, who marked her acting Bollywood debut in Abbas – Mustan’s Taarzan: The Wonder Car in 2004, and appeared in films including Shaadi Se Pehle (2006), Dor (2006), Cash (2007), De Taali (2008) and 8 x 10 Tasveer (2009), is married to Farhan Azmi, the son of Member of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra Abu Asim Azmi, in 2009. Farhan Azmi joined the Samajwadi Party and became the state president of the Yuva Cell (youth wing of the party) in 2014. Together, the couple has a son born in 2013.
4. Navneet Kaur Rana – Ravi Rana (2011)
South Indian and Bollywood actress Navneet Kaur is married to independent MLA Ravi Rana. The actress who primarily worked in Telugu films and Hindi film Chetna (2005), married politician Ravi Rana in a mass marriage on 03 February 2011 in Amravati, Maharashtra. Her husband is an independent politician currently representing the Badnera (Vidhan Sabha seat) in Amravati District of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra while she is an elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Amravati in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate. The couple has two children.
5. Swara Bhasker – Fahad Zirar Ahmad (2023)
Whenever there’ll be a mention of Indian actors and politicians in the same context, Swara Bhasker and Fahad Zirar Ahmad’s marriage will get a special mention. Not that there was an inter-caste marriage but a lot of drama which was not necessary. Swara Bhasker who has appeared in films including Tanu Weds Manu, Raanjhanaa, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Nil Battey Sannata, Anaarkali of Aarah, and Veere Di Wedding, etc. married the leader of Samajwadi Party Fahad Zirar Ahmad in January 2023 but announced it on the 16 February 2023. The two reportedly met on the stage during a protest in January 2020 against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
6. Parineeti Chopra – Raghav Chadha (2023)
Parineeti Chopra is the latest entrant to the list of Bollywood actresses who married politicians. Known for delivering box office hits like Ishaqzaade (2012), Shuddh Desi Romance (2013), Hasee Toh Phasee (2014), Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021), Saina (2021) and Uunchai (2022), Parineeti Chopra got engaged to Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi Legislative Assembly member Raghav Chadha in an intimate ceremony in Delhi on 13 May 2023. The couple tied the nuptial knot in Udaipur, Rajasthan on 24 September 2023.
