Basu Chatterjee was one Bollywood's iconic writer, director, producer and actor who before joining films worked as an illustrator and cartoonist with the weekly tabloid Blitz published in Bombay. He started his film career by assisting director Basu Bhattacharya in Teesri Kasam in 1966 after which he made his debut as a director with Sara Akash in 1969, which won him the Filmfare Best Screenplay Award that year. He went on to direct critically acclaimed movies like Piya Ka Ghar (1972), Rajnigandha (1974), Chhoti Si Baat (1975), Chitchor (1976), Swami (1977), Priyatama (1977), Khatta Meetha (1978), Dillagi (1978), Manzil (1979), Baton Baton Mein (1979) and Man Pasand (1980). He also directed films in Bengali and renowned TV serials like Rajani, Byomkesh Bakshi, Darpan and Kakaji Kahin.
