Shyam Benegal was one Indian cinema’s prominent film director, writer and producer who also made well-known TV series and documentary films. He was regarded as the pioneer of parallel cinema who dominated the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s with his realistic and hard-hitting themes. He made his directorial debut in 1974 with ‘Ankur’ and later directed films including ‘Nishant’, ‘Manthan’, ‘Junoon’, ‘Kalyug’, ‘Mandi’, ‘Sardari Begum’, ‘Zubeidaa’, ‘Welcome To Sajjanpur’ and ‘Well Done Abba’, etc. He was a recipient of several accolades, including eighteen National Film Awards, a Filmfare Award and a Nandi Award, the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005, the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. He died on 23 December 2024 after suffering from a chronic kidney-related disease at the age of 90.
