Thomas Beach Alter, popularly known as Tom Alter, was an Indian actor, who had English, Scottish and Swiss German ancestry. Well-known for his works in Hindi cinema and theatre, Tom Alter often amazed people with his polished fluent Urdu, despite the foreign looks. After graduating from FTII, he headed to Mumbai and got his first big break in the Dev Anand starrer Saheb Bahadur (1977), directed by Chetan Anand. He has also acted in movies like Naukri (1978), Hum Tere Aashiq Hain (1979), Kranti (1981), Gandhi (1982), Nastik (1983), Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), Tridev (1989), Gumrah (1993), Love at Times Square (2003), Avatar (2009), and many more. In 1977, he married Carol Evans, with whom he has two children, Jamie and Afshaan.
