Lagaan is a period sports drama set in India’s pre-independence era during the British Raj in 1893 where Captain Andrew Russell (Paul Blackthorne), commanding officer of Champaner cantonment imposes heavy taxes on the local farmers in the villages. Due to drought, the farmers are unable to pay their taxes and request Captain Russell to forgo it till the rains don’t happen. Leading the group of farmers is Bhuvan (Aamir Khan) who requests the local King to help them and ask Captain Russell to waive off their taxes. Captain Russell considers waiving off their taxes on one condition that the village farmers defeat them in a cricket match. Does Bhuvan accept their challenge or not forms the interesting part of this epic story.
