Bollywood is known for its affairs, hook-ups, link-ups, marriage, break-ups, separations, divorces, in short making or breaking of relationships is not new. Films which portray the essence and importance of relationships on screen are more than often the opposite in real-life, well almost. Living in times where live-in relationships are meant to be cool and marriages are no longer a lifetime commitment, we have seen two marriages are no more uncommon in Bollywood, while some go further than that and marry three or more than thrice. 1. Sanjay Dutt (Richa Sharma, Rhea Pillai, Manyata) – 3 Marriages
‘The Khalnayak’ of Bollywood, Sanjay Dutt married not once or twice but thrice. Some of his notable works include Rocky (1981), Jeete Hain Shaan Se (1988), Saajan (1991), Khalnayak (1993), Mission Kashmir (2001), Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003), and Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006). Sanjay Dutt’s first marriage was to actress Richa Sharma in 1987 and the couple became parents to a daughter, Trishala Dutt. The marriage ended with Richa’s death because of a brain tumor in 1996. He then married model Rhea Pillai in 1998, the marriage was childless, and the two finally separated in 2008. In the same year, he married actress Manyata, who was 19 years younger than him. Despite the age gap, they have a successful marriage and the two share a strong bond. In 2010, they became parents to twins, a daughter Iqra Dutt and a son Shahraan Dutt.

16. Kishore Kumar (Ruma Ghosh, Madhubala, Yogeeta Bali, Leena Chandavarkar) – 4 Marriages
Kishore Kumar, also referred to as Kishore Da, was the most successful singer and actor of Indian cinema. He is known for singing super hit songs like ‘Roop Tera Mastana’ from Aradhana (1969), ‘Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai’ from Kati Patang (1971), ‘Pag Ghungroo Baandh' from Namak Halal (1983), Inteha Ho Gayi from Sharaabi (1984), etc. This legendary singer married four times. Kishore Kumar’s first marriage was to actress Ruma Guhathakurta in 1950, with whom he has a son, an Indian playback singer, and actor, Amit Kumar. However, the couple separated in 1958. In 1960, he married legendary actress Madhubala. It was an unhappy marriage as Madhubala, being from another religion, wasn’t accepted by Kishore Kumar’s parents, and the marriage tragically ended with Madhubala’s death in 1969. He then married the leading actress Yogeeta Bali in 1976, however, the marriage was short-lived and childless and ended in 1978. In 1980, he married actress Leena Chandavarkar, who was 21 years younger than him, and the marriage lasted until his death in 1987. The couple was blessed with a son, singer Sumit Kumar.
17. Anup Jalota (Sonali Sheth, Bina Bhatia, Medha Gujral) - 3 Marriages
Popularly known as ‘Bhajan Samrat’ Anup Jalota is well-known for his devotional music and ghazals like ‘Aisi Laagi Lagan’, ‘Jag Mein Sundar Hain Do Naam’, ‘Tere Mann Mein Ram’, etc. The bhajan maestro's first marriage was with his student Sonali Sheth, a Gujarati girl who later became a singer. Despite marrying against his family's approval, the marriage didn’t last and ended in a divorce. Sonali later married singer Roop Kumar Rathod while Anup’s second marriage to Bina Bhatia, which was an arranged one, too ended in a divorce. Anup's third marriage was with Medha Gujral, niece of former Indian Prime Minister I. K. Gujral and director Shekhar Kapur's first wife whom he had divorced in 1994. Anup and Medha have a son named Aryaman. Medha died in 2014 due to a renal failure. Since then, Anup has been living all by himself.
18. Mithun Chakraborty (Helena Luke, Yogeeta Bali, Sridevi) – 3 Marriages
Mithun Chakraborty who was yet to become a star in the late 70s married upcoming actress Helena Luke who was a struggling actress then and later appeared in films like Judaai (1980), Saath Saath (1982), Romance (1983) and Mard (1985). Mithun Chakraborty’s marriage with Helena was short-lived as he went on to marry his co-star Yogeeta Bali who was nursing a broken marriage to Kishore Kumar. Post marriage to Yogeeta, Mithun became a big star and starred in movies like Sahhas (1981), Disco Dancer (1982), Pyari Behna (1985), Dance Dance (1987), Prem Pratigya (1989), Agneepath (1990), and Jallad (1995). He had three sons and a daughter with Yogeeta Bali. Mithun’s popularity got him to work with many top heroines of which he grew closer to Sridevi. Mithun secretly married Sridevi in 1985 but had to call it off in 1988 as Yogeeta threatened to end her life. Thereafter Mithun went back to Yogeeta Bali.
19. K. Asif (Akhtar Asif, Nigar Sultana, Sitara Devi) – 3 Marriages
K. Asif, an Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter, is known for directing the blockbusters Phool (1945) and Mughal-e-Azam (1960). This filmmaker married thrice. K. Asif’s first marriage was to Akhtar Asif, younger sister of actor Dilip Kumar who also completed the unfinished project of her husband Love and God, which was released in 1986, fifteen years after K. Asif’s death. He then married actress Sitara Devi, who was earlier married to K. Asif’s cousin Nazir Ahmed Khan. This was Sitara Devi’s third and K. Asif’s second marriage. He was also married to actress Nigar Sultana, who played an important role in his movie Mughal-e-Azam (1960).
20. Alyque Padamsee (Pearl Padamsee, Dolly Thakore, Sharon Prabhakar) – 3 Marriages
Actor, Ad-man, and theatre personality Alyque Padamsee who played the role of Jinnah in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi (1982) had married thrice in real life. Alyque Padamsee’s first marriage was with actress Pearl Padamsee who appeared in films like Khatta Meetha and Baton Baton Mein. After his divorce to Pearl, he married veteran theatre actress and casting director Dolly Thakore and had a son named Quasar Thakore Padamsee. After separating from Dolly, Alyque married actress and playback singer Sharon Prabhakar in 1986 with whom he had a daughter Shazahn Padamsee who appeared in films like Rocket Singh, Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji and Housefull 2. The couple separated a few years after their daughter was born. Alyque passed away in 2018 at the age of 90.
21. Inder Kumar (Sonal Kariya, Kamaljeet Kaur, Pallavi Sarraf) – 3 Marriages
Inder Kumar, an Indian actor who was best known for playing supporting roles in movies like Masoom (1996), Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), Kahin Pyaar Na Ho (2000), Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge (2002), and Wanted (2009), married three times. Inder Kumar’s first marriage was to his mentor film publicist Rajoo Kariya’s daughter, Sonal Kariya. The two married in 2003 but separated within five months of marriage while his wife was still pregnant with his daughter Khushi. In 2009, he married Kamaljeet Kaur but the marriage only lasted for two months. In 2013, he married Pallavi Saraf and the couple had a daughter Bhavana. The actor died after a cardiac arrest in 2017, putting an end to his third marriage.
22. Mahesh Anand (Barkha Roy, Erika Maria D’Souza, Madhu Malhotra, Usha Bachani) – 4 Marriages
One of Bollywood’s most good-looking hunks, Mahesh Anand who mostly appeared as a baddie in films like Insaaf (1987), Kabzaa (1988), Toofan (1989), Mahaadev (1989), Swarg (1990), Pratikar (1991), Nishchaiy (1992), Sir (1993), Coolie No.1 (1995), initially married actress Reena Roy’s sister and producer Barkha Roy. The two got closer during the making of Karishmaa (1984) and married after the film’s release. Their marriage was short-lived as Mahesh later married Miss India International Erika Maria D'souza in 1988, which again broke up due to Mahesh’s temperamental ways. His third marriage was with small-time actress Madhu Malhotra in 1992 who appeared in movies like Karz (1980), Vidhaata (1982), Satte Pe Satta (1982), Yudh (1985), etc. Mahesh Anand’s fourth marriage was with actress Usha Bachani in 2000, who appeared in movies like Taal (1999), Deewane (2000), Raju Chacha (2000), Fashion (2008), and Beiimaan Love (2016). Mahesh got married for the fifth time to Russian model Lana in 2015, which again hit rough waters. Though not much was known about their separation, the actor’s death in 2019 put an end to an illustrious career.
23. Balu Mahendra (Ahileshwari, Shoba, Mounika) – 3 Marriages
Award-winning cinematographer and director Balu Mahendra who was more prominent in Tamil cinema than Bollywood was married thrice. Balu who directed the critically acclaimed 1983 film Sadma starring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi was first married to Akhileshwari in 1963. Despite being an already married man having a son, he married actress Shoba in 1978. The marriage ended in 1980 after Shoba committed suicide following their marriage. Although the media accused Balu of the actress’s death, he married for the third time in 1998 to another actress called Mounika but only acknowledged it publicly in 2004.
24. Nazir Ahmad Khan (Sikandara Begum, Sitara Devi, Swaran Lata) – 3 Marriages
Actor, producer, and director Nazir Ahmad Khan who had acted in movies like Farebi Daku (1931), Lal-E-Yaman (1933), Chandragupta (1934), Baghban (1938), Taj Mahal (1941), Ghar Sansar (1942), etc., migrated to Pakistan post-partition and continued making films there. Nazir Ahmed Khan’s marriage took place three times, the first being to Sikandara Begum who was the sister of famous filmmaker K.Asif. He later went on to marry actress and Kathak dancer Sitara Devi which was short-lived. Just before India’s partition, he married for the third time to actress Swaran Lata who had acted in famous films like Awaaz (1942), Tasveer (1943), Pratigya (1943), Ishara (1943), Us Paar (1944) Rattan (1944) and Wamaq Azra (1946). Post-partition she migrated along with her husband Nazir and converted to Islam and continued acting in Pakistani films.
25. Jagdeep (Sughra Begum, Naseem Begum, Nazima) – 3 Marriages
Comedian Jagdeep is known for his memorable roles in movies like Do Bigha Zamin, Bhabhi, Barkha, Brahmachari, Sholay, Soorma Bhopali and Andaz Apna Apna, had married three times. His first marriage was to Sughra Begum in 1960 from whom he had two sons – actor Javed Jaffery and television producer/director Naved Jaffery.
