K. Bhagyaraj was an actor, screenwriter and director who worked in Tamil and Hindi film industry. He began his journey in the film industry as an assistant to acclaimed directors G. Ramakrishnan and Bharathiraja, where his exceptional scriptwriting skills soon earned recognition. He initially appeared in brief supporting roles in films such as 16 Vayathinile (1977) and Sigappu Rojakkal (1978), while also serving as Bharathiraja's assistant director on 16 Vayathinile and Kizhakke Pogum Rail. During this period, he wrote the screenplay for Kizhakke Pogum Rail (1978) and Tik Tik Tik (1981), besides penning the dialogues for Sigappu Rojakkal. Bhagyaraj made his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal (1979) and his debut as a lead actor in Bharathiraja's Puthiya Vaarpugal (1979), which also earned him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Dialogue Writer. The same year, he wrote the screenplay and dialogues and starred in Kanni Paruvathile (1979), further establishing himself as a multifaceted talent. He debuted in Bollywood as a writer by writing stories for movies like Ek Hi Bhool (1981), Woh 7 Din (1983), Aakhree Raasta (1986), Beta (1992), Raja Babu (1994), Andaz (1994), Mr. Bechara (1996) and Gharwali Baharwali (1998), etc. He also directed three film including Aakhree Raasta (1986), Mr. Bechara (1996) and Papa The Great (2000). He died of a cardiac arrest on 27 June 2026 at the age of 73.
