Haider is a crime drama and the modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet. The story revolves around Haider Meer (Shahid Kapoor), a young man who returns to Jammu and Kashmir at the time of violent insurgency to seek answers for his father’s sudden disappearance. He begins the search with the help of his childhood sweetheart Arshia Lone (Shraddha Kapoor), but he is saddened to see the growing closeness between his mother and uncle. While on the search for answers, Haider finds himself being overpowered by the law and decides to take up the mantle of seeking revenge from the people who turned his life upside down.
