Prateeksha is an action drama. A married couple - Laxmi (Moushumi Chatterjee) and Vijay (Jeetendra), lead a happy life, until one of the ex-suitors of Laxmi Dinesh Khanna (Danny Denzongpa), who didn’t take the rejection very well, comes in their life. He kills Vijay, leaving Laxmi and her son Raja alone. Raja (Govinda) grows up and becomes successful, and falls in love with Renu (Shilpa Shirodkar). However, little does he know that Renu is the daughter of Dinesh, the killer of his father. Will the past enmity make the lovers fall apart?
