Amar Prem is the Hindi remake of the Bengali hit film Nishi Padma based on the story Hinger Kochuri by Bibhuti Bhushan Banerji. The story is that of Pushpa (Sharmila Tagore) who has been abandoned by her husband in the village. Pushpa decides to leave the village and shift to the city of Kolkata where she is forced into prostitution to make a living. A rich businessman by the name of Anand (Rajesh Khanna) who does not find love in his own home finds solace at Pushpa’s place. Pushpa develops a motherly bond with her neighbor’s son who is treated badly by her stepmother. Seeing their son developing an attachment with Pushpa they decide to shift their house. Years pass as the boy grows into a young man only to return to take an old Pushpa to his house.
