Nirupa Roy was an Indian actress who was active in the Indian film industry for over five decades. She was best known for her tragic motherly roles, which gained her title the ‘Queen of Misery’. She made her acting debut in Bollywood with the 1946 film Amar Raj. She is best known for her works in movies like Munimji (1955), Chhaya (1961), Shehnai (1964), Deewaar (1975), Kranti (1981), Khoon Aur Paani (1981) Chor Police (1983) and Humshakal (1992). She married Kamal Roy in 1946 and the couple had two children. She is the recipient of several awards including the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (2004).
