What Oscars is to Hollywood, Filmfare Awards is to Bollywood. Filmfare Awards were introduced in 1954 as ‘The Clares’ that later was renamed as Filmfare Awards which is one of the most prestigious awards given to honour artistic as well as technical excellence of professionals in most Indian film language industries of India. Regarded as one of the oldest film events in India, the Filmfare Awards have come of age for the people of Bollywood that have given fans some exceptional magical moments over the years that are cherished for a lifetime. For decades, the elegant and prestigious Black Lady has developed a legacy and credibility for itself in the world of Indian cinema but not without its share of controversies and records. Each year in every event held we get to see some new records set and old records broken. Today, we check out Bollywood’s top 10 historic films that won the most Filmfare awards.
1. Gully Boy (2019) – 13 Awards
Director Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy was a story about a slum rapper who paves his way to success and makes a name for himself in the world of music. Starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin and Siddhant Chaturvedi, the film went on to sweep that year’s maximum trophies thus, holding the record of the most Filmfare awards won by a single film with 13 awards to its name. The film ended up winning the following awards:

2. Devdas (2002) – 11 Awards
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s version of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee’s novel by the same title, Devdas was nothing less than a grandeur with extravagant sets, costumes, dances and performances by the lead cast comprising of Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai. The film was a winner at the box office and bagged a majority of eleven Filmfare Awards in all to become the second-highest Bollywood film to win maximum trophies. 3. Black (2005) – 11 Awards
Inspired by the activist Helen Keller's life and her 1903 autobiography, The Story of My Life, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black narrated the story of a deaf-and-blind girl and her relationship with her teacher who later develops Alzheimer’s. Black was set in a different world all together giving us one of the best performances from Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji. Applauded by the masses as well as critics, the film went on to become the third-highest Filmfare Award earner of all time by bagging trophies at the 51st award function in the following categories:

4. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) / Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022) - 10 Awards
Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge not just broke all the then-existing box office records but also bagged that year’s majority of Filmfare Awards as expected. Though the musical romantic comedy went on to become the longest-running movie in theatres, it faced tough competition from many films released in 1995. DDLJ held the record for winning the maximum Filmfare Awards until Devdas displaced it in 2003. The only award that many were surprised about not winning was the ‘Best Music’ trophy that went to A.R. Rahman for Rangeela.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi walked away with most of the awards at the 68th Filmfare Awards held in 2023. The movie that had Alia Bhatt in an authored back role was applauded by one and all and was a forgone conclusion to bad the 'Best Actress' award. The film equaled the record of Aditya Chopra's DDLJ by winning 10 Filmfare Awards.

5. Madhumati (1958) – 9 Awards
Director – producer Bimal Roy’s evergreen black and white classic Madhumati was a reincarnation revenge drama starring Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, Pran and Johnny Walker. Besides having towering performances by the lead cast, Salil Choudhury’s music remained the highlight of the film that had more than 10 songs including the unforgettable Dil Tadap Tadap Ke, Suhana Safar Aur Yeh Mausam, Aaja Re Pardesi and many others. The film in all garnered 9 awards making it to the list of top 10 Bollywood movies that won the most Filmfare Awards which remained a record until 1942: A Love Story & DDLJ broke it.

6. 1942: A Love Story (1994) – 9 Awards
Set in the pre-independence era of India’s Quit India Movement, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 1942: A Love Story also features in the top 10 Bollywood films that won the highest number of Filmfare awards. With an ensemble star cast of Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Pran, Danny and others, 1942: A Love Story became more memorable for being the swansong of music director R.D. Burman who left us before the release of the film. Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s direction was top-notch and the performances were outstanding. The Filmfare awards that the film alone won that year were:

Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan made a dramatic comeback in 2000 with Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai smashed all previous box office records. The sensational debut of Hrithik Roshan took the box office by storm making him the next superstar of the silver screen. The film unexpectedly swept that year’s all-popular awards including the Filmfare Awards and thus featured among the 10 Bollywood movies that won the highest number of Filmfare Awards. The film reportedly ended up winning 92 awards in all, which is a Guinness World Record to date.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Hindi movie adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello, Omkara was a crime drama that had a multi-star cast of Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, Naseeruddin Shah and Bipasha Basu. The film was a box office success and duly went on to become one of the Bollywood movies that won the maximum number of Filmfare Awards by bagging nine of them in the following categories:

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum costume period drama Bajirao Mastani was a unanimous winner at the box office. The director's long cherished dream that he had planned with Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in 2005 was finally realized in 2015 starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra.

Despite getting a release on OTT, the critically acclaimed movie made on India’s revolutionary freedom fighter Sardar Udham Singh who avenged the killings of Jallianwala Bagh, grabbed a lot of eyeballs.
