Known for her versatility, Asha Bhosle is an Indian playback singer, occasional actress and television personality. She and her sister, Lata Mangeshkar, are among the most successful Indian female singers, and it was their contribution that brought revolution in Bollywood music. Recipient of several accolades, Asha Bhosle was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and also had two Grammy nominations. She holds the Guinness World Record for the most studio recordings - singles. She started her career in Bollywood in the early 1950s. Her first recorded song was ‘Raatein Bheeg Jaayegi’ from Alif Laila (1953). The industry was dominated by singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Geeta Dutt in the 1950s and 1960s, but eventually Asha made her way to the top. She has recorded songs for movies like Gumrah (1963), Aadmi Aur Insaan (1966), Don (1978), Umrao Jaan (1981), Rangeela (1995), Lagaan (2001), and many more. At the age of 16, she eloped with 31-year old Ganpatrao Bhosle, with whom she had three children, but the two separated in 1960. Later, she married music composer R. D. Burman in 1980.
