Bappi Lahiri was one of Indian cinema’s most renowned singers, composers, actors and producers who was popularly called the king of disco and pop. Born in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal in 1952 to musicians Aparesh and Bansuri Lahiri, he started to play the tabla at the age of 3 and thereon became a composer. After debuting as a composer for the Bengali film Dadu he headed to Mumbai where he got his first break as music director in 1973 in Shomu Mukerjee’s Nannha Shikari. But it was the superhit songs of Zakhmee (1975) and Chalte-Chalte (1976) that announced his arrival in Bollywood. This was followed by hits like Aap Ki Khatir, Surakksha, Wardat, Disco Dancer, Hathkadi, Namak Halaal, Himmatwala, Tohfa, Sharaabi, Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, Dance Dance and many others. Some of his hit songs as playback singer were Bambai Se Aaya Mera Dost (Aap Ki Khatir), Tumhara Pyaar Chahiye (Manokaamnaa), Mausam Hai Gaane Ka (Surakksha), Yaad Aa Raha Hai (Disco Dancer), Raat Baaki (Namak Halaal), Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re (Saaheb), Oo Laa Laa (The Dirty Picture), etc. His career spanned over five decades including over 500 movies in various languages while collaborating with some of India’s top stars, singers, and filmmakers. He breathed his last on 15 February 2022 due to obstructive sleep apnea at a hospital in Mumbai. He is survived by his wife Chitrani Lahiri, son and musician Bappa Lahiri, daughter Rema Lahiri and grand-children.
