The last three years saw a good number of Bollywood celebrity deaths that were hard to overcome. The recent years have brought us sadder than good news leaving us poorer by the passing away of many prominent and famous Bollywood celebrities. As we embrace 2023 all of us hope and pray for it to get us more good news than sad news though nobody can change the law of nature. Like any other year the year 2023 witnessed many of our beloved celebrities and personalities losing their lives who were loved by the entire world. These irreparable losses have left Bollywood fans with the consolation that the departed souls have gone to a better world. The void that these Bollywood celebrity deaths have left can never be replenished. As a tribute to the departed souls let’s take a look at the list of famous Indian celebrities who left us in 2023:
1. Sunil Babu (Production Designer) (DoB: 1972, DoD: 05 January 2023)
Noted art director and production designer Sunil Babu passed away in Ernakulam, Kerala on 05 January 2023 following a cardiac arrest. Born in 1972 in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, the 50-year-old Sunil Babu was a promising art director who worked in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Bollywood film industries. He started his film career by assisting production designer Sabu Cyril before turning independent production designer for Malayalam movies such as Ananthabhadram, Bangalore Days, Kayamkulam Kochunni, Pazhassiraja, Urumi, Chotta Mumbai, Premam, Notebook and Sita Ramam. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Art Director for the movie Ananthabhadram in 2005. He also worked on Hindi films like Tahaan, Ghajini, Paa, I.D., Special 26, Ramaiya Vastavaiya, Singh Is Bliing, M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, and Operation Romeo.
2. Peter Pereira (Cinematographer) (DoB: 1929, DoD: 10 January 2023)
Veteran Bollywood cinematographer and special effects provider, Peter Pereira passed away in Mumbai on 10 January 2023 at the age of 93. The lensman who started his Bollywood journey by working as an apprentice in filmmaker Homi Wadia’s Basant Studio died of age-related health issues. His first film as an independent cameraman was Parasmani (1963) after which he helmed the cinematography for hits like Sachaa Jhutha (1970), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Yaarana (1981), Desh Premee (1982), Coolie (1983), Mard (1985), Mr. India (1987), Shahenshah (1988), Ajooba (1991) and Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), etc.
3. Sanjay Chauhan (Screenwriter) (DoB: 1960, DoD: 12 January 2023)
Eminent Bollywood screenwriter Sanjay Chauhan (Sanjay Chouhan) breathed his last in Mumbai on 12 January 2023 at the age of 62. Sanjay was undergoing treatment for liver cirrhosis at a Mumbai hospital for the last two weeks before passing away leaving behind his wife and daughter. Born in Bhopal in 1960, he started his career as a journalist in Delhi before shifting to Mumbai in the 90s where he wrote crime-based TV series like Bhanwar for Sony TV. He got his first break in Bollywood as a dialogue writer in Ashwini Chaudhary’s Dhoopin 2003 after which he wrote for several popular films like I Am Kalam, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, Right Yaaa Wrong, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Paan Singh Tomar, and Saheb Biwi Gangster series.
4. Nasir Faraaz (Lyricist) (DoB: N.A., DoD: 15 January 2023)
Popular lyricist Nasir Faraaz passed away due to a heart attack on 15 January 2023. Nasir Faraaz was known for his works in Hindi Cinema where he started his career as a lyricist in 2001 when he penned the songs for Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar (2001). He later went on to write many popular songs like ‘Dil Kyun Mera Shor Kare’ and ‘Zindagi Do Pal Ki’ for the Hrithik Roshan starrer Kites in 2010. He also wrote songs like ‘Deewani Mastani’ for Bajirao Mastani, ‘Koi Tumsa Nahin’ and ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ for Krrish, ‘Main Tere Kaabil Hoon’ and ‘Mon Amour’ for Kaabil and films like Koi... Mil Gaya, Love At Times Square, Aetbaar, etc.
5. Jamuna (Actress) (DoB: 30 August 1936, DoD: 27 January 2023)
Veteran actress Jamuna passed away at her home in Hyderabad due to age-related issues on 27 January 2023. The well-known actress, director and politician who breathed her last at the age of 86 had appeared in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi films from 1953 to 1990. Born as Jana Bai in Hampi, Karnataka in 1936, she made her acting debut in Garikapati Rajarao’s Telugu film Puttillu (1953) at the age of 16 before gaining recognition in director L. V. Prasad's Telugu hit Missamma (1955). She made her Bollywood debut in 1957 with Miss Mary but got noticed in the 1967 hit film Milan which was a remake of her Telugu hit Mooga Manasulu (1964) where she reprised her role and went on to win the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also featured in popular films like Hamrahi (1963), Beti Bete (1964), Rishte Naate (1965), Dulhan (1975), Naukar Biwi Ka (1983), and Raaj Tilak (1984). She won the Rajahmundry constituency seat in the 9th Lok Sabha (1989–1991). She is survived by a son, Vamsee Juluri, and a daughter, Sravanthi.
6. K. Viswanath (Actor, Writer, Director) (DoB: 19 February 1930, DoD: 02 February 2023)
Legendary director, screenwriter, and actor, K. Viswanath breathed his last at his residence in Hyderabad on 02 February 2023. The 92-year-old veteran filmmaker was suffering from age-related health issues and directed more than 50 films in Telugu and Hindi. Born in 1930 in Repalle of Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, he started his film career as an audiographer in Telugu films before making his directorial debut with Vanakesari in 1960. Some of his popular directorial in Telugu were O Seeta Katha (1974), Jeevana Jyothi (1975), Sankarabharanam (1980), Sagara Sangamam (1983), Swathi Muthyam (1986), Swayam Krushi (1987) and Sutradhaarulu (1990), etc. Some of his memorable Hindi films were Sargam (1979), Kaamchor (1982), Shubh Kaamna (1983), Jaag Utha Insan (1984), Sur Sangam (1985), Sanjog (1985), Eeshwar (1989), and Sangeet (1992). He was a recipient of five National Film Awards, seven state Nandi Awards, ten Filmfare Awards South, and a Filmfare Award in Hindi. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992 and was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2017. He is survived by his wife and four children.
7. Vani Jairam (Playback Singer) (DoB: 30 November 1945, DoD: 04 February 2023)
Veteran playback singer Vani Jairam was found dead at her residence in Chennai on 04 February 2023 after receiving an injury to her forehead. Born as Kalaivani in 1945 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, Vani Jairam sang over 10,000 songs in multiple languages including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Bhojpuri, and Marathi. She was a recipient of many state and national awards including the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (South) for her achievements in South Indian film music. She collaborated with many famous music directors and lent her voice to many leading actresses of her time. As far as Bollywood is concerned, she shot to fame with the song ‘Bole Re Papihara’ from Guddi (1971) and thereafter sang for movies like Pakeezah (1972), Chhalia (1973), Ek Mutthi Aasman (1973), Parinay (1974), Khoon Ka Badla Khoon (1978), Meera (1979), etc.
8. Nazim Hassan Rizvi (Producer) (DoB: 1952, DoD: 06 February 2023)
Controversial Bollywood producer Nazim Hassan Rizvi breathed his last on 06 February 2023 in Mumbai. He was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai before passing away. Born in 1952, Nazim Hassan Rizvi was known for producing the Salman Khan starrer Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001) which was directed by Abbas – Mustan. Before the release of the film, he was arrested in 2000 for his links with the underworld, following which he was sentenced to six years imprisonment. He started his Bollywood career as a producer in 1991 with the movie Majboor Ladki which was followed by films like Apaatkaal (1993), Angaar Vadee (1998), Undertrial (2007), Hello Hum Lallann Bol Rahe Hain (2010), etc. As a writer, he had written movies like Undertrial, Qasam Se Qasam Se, and directed the Marathi film Laden Aala Re Aala (2017).
9. Lalitha Lajmi (Actress, Artist) (DoB: 17 October 1932, DoD: 13 February 2023)
Acclaimed Indian painter and actress Lalitha Lajmi breathed her last on 13 February 2023 at the age of 90. The veteran artist who died of age-related issues was the younger sister of late actor and filmmaker Guru Dutt and Atma Ram and the mother of filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi. Born in Kolkata in 1932, she was a self-taught artist who started painting in the early 60s and thereafter had several of her own national and international art exhibitions for over five decades. She appeared in a cameo in Aamir Khan's 2007 film, Taare Zameen Par, and also worked as a graphics artist in Aghaat (1985).
10. Javed Khan Amrohi (Actor) (DoB: 24 March 1949, DoD: 14 February 2023)
Veteran Bollywood and television actor Javed Khan Amrohi breathed his last on 14 February 2023 at the age of 73 in Mumbai. The popular comedian and supporting actor who had featured in more than 170 movies and TV series spanning over five decades, reportedly was suffering from breathing problems and was admitted to the Surya Nursing Home, Santacruz, where he breathed his last. He started his acting career in 1973 with Jalte Badan and Zanjeer and thereafter played pivotal roles in films like Hum Hain Sadak (1991), Bol Radha Bol (1992), Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993), Andaaz Apna Apna (1994), Lagaan (2001) and Chak De! India (2007), etc. His last big screen appearance was as Pakya in Mahesh Bhatt’s Sadak 2 (2020). Some of his popular TV shows were Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984), Nukkad (1986), Mirza Ghalib (1988), and Ghar Jamai (1997), etc.
11. Shahnawaz Pradhan (Actor) (DoB: 1966, DoD: 17 February 2023)
Popular television and film actor Shahnawaz Pradhan died of a heart attack while attending an awards function in Mumbai on 17 February 2023. The supporting actor who was famous for playing important roles in films like M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Khuda Haafiz, Raees, Phantom and Manto, breathed his last at the age of 56. He had also featured in the popular web series - The Family Man and Hostages, and TV shows Krishna and 24 among others. He shot to fame after playing Sindbad the Sailor in the popular fantasy television series, Alif Laila (1993–97) and Nand Baba in Ramanand Sagar's Epic TV serial Shree Krishna. He has also acted in the Marathi serial Kahe Diya Pardes, aired on Zee Marathi.
12. Bela Bose (Actress) (DoB: 01 January 1943, DoD: 20 February 2023)
Veteran Bollywood actress and classical dancer, Bela Bose passed away on 20 February 2023 in Mumbai due to age-related issues. The 80-year-old actress was one of the most well-known dancers of the late 50s, 60s, and 70s era, along with the likes of Helen and Aruna Irani. Trained in classical Manipuri dance form, Bela Bose worked in the industry from 1950s to 1980s featuring in over 200 Hindi and regional Indian films. She started her career as a background dancer at the age of 14 in films like Bhagam Bhag, C.I.D., Shirin Farhad, Dulhan, and Black Cat before featuring in popular films like Main Nashe Mein Hoon (1959), Sautela Bhai (1962), Hawa Mahal (1962), Professor (1962) and Amrapali (1966), Shikar (1968), Jeene Ki Raah (1969), Yeh Gulistan Hamara (1972), and Jai Santoshi Maa (1975). She was married to Bollywood actor Ashish Kumar and is survived by her son, daughter, and grandson.
13. Satish Kaushik (Actor, Writer & Director) (DoB: 13 April 1956, DoD: 09 March 2023)
The passing away of Bollywood actor-writer-director Satish Kaushik came as a rude shock to many of us on 09 March 2023. Born in 1956, the well-known comedian breathed his last at the age of 66 in Gurgaon after suffering a heart attack where he went to celebrate Holi with his friends. An alumnus of the National School of Drama and FTII, Satish started his Bollywood career as an actor in Aadharshila in 1982 and went on to play memorable comic characters like Calendar in Mr. India, Kashiram in Ram Lakhan, Muthu in Saajan Chale Sasural and Pappu Pager in Deewana Mastana, etc. He made his directorial debut in 1993 with Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and thereafter wielded the megaphone for flicks like Prem (1995), Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999), Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai (2001), Tere Naam (2003) and Gang of Ghosts (2014), etc. He is survived by his wife Shashi Kaushik and a daughter.
14. Pradeep Uppoor (Producer) (DoB: N.A., DoD: 13 March 2023)
Pradeep Uppoor was a well-known producer of Bollywood movies, commercials, television serials, and documentaries who breathed his last in Singapore on 13 March 2023. The veteran producer who produced critically acclaimed movies such as Chakra (1981), Ardh Satya (1983), Hip Hip Hurray (1984), Holi (1984), and Aghaat (1985), was ailing from cancer and was undergoing treatment in Singapore. One of his most popular TV series was C.I.D. on Sony TV which he co-produced with B.P. Singh and the 2021 ZEE5 original film Nail Polish.
15. Sameer Kakkar (Actor) (DoB: 09 August 1952, DoD: 15 March 2023)
Veteran TV and film actor Sameer Kakkar breathed his last at the age of 70 in Mumbai. The actor who is mostly remembered for his role as ‘Khopdi’ in the TV show Nukkad, and serials like Circus and Shrimaan Shrimati, was admitted to MM Hospital in Borivali in suburban Mumbai on Tuesday morning following respiratory issues. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of MM Hospital where he suffered multiple organ failure and breathed his last on 15 March 2023. His notable performances remain in films like Jawab Hum Denge, Pushpak, Shahenshah, Parinda, Rakhwala, Guru, Shehzaade, Vardi, Awwal Number, Jai Ho, and Hasee Toh Phasee, etc. He was last seen in Sudhir Mishra's web series Serious Men and Vikas Bahl's web series Sunflower. He is survived by his wife.
16. Bhalchandra Kulkarni (Actor) (DoB: 1935, DoD: 18 March 2023)
Renowned Marathi stage, TV, and film actor Bhalchandra Kulkarni passed away at his residence in Kolhapur, Maharashtra on Saturday at the age of 88 after battling age-related health issues. The veteran actor who acted in over 250 Hindi and Marathi films started his career in 1965 by appearing in folk plays known as the Tamasha - a traditional form of Maharashtra's theatre. He was known for portraying emotional roles and sensitive characters in Marathi films like Songadya (1970), Pinjra (1972), Mardani (1983), Zunz Tujhi Majhi (1992), and others. Some of the Hindi films that he worked in were Raavan (1984), Khol De Meri Zuban (1989), Masoom (1996), Le Chal Apne Sang (2000), etc. He is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter, and an extended family.
17. Pradeep Sarkar (Director) (DoB: 30 April 1955, DoD: 24 March 2023)
Popular writer, producer, and director Pradeep Sarkar passed away at a hospital in Mumbai on 24 March 2023 at the age of 67. The filmmaker who was best known for making the movie Parineeta was on dialysis and his potassium levels had dropped drastically. Born in Kolkata in 1955, Pradeep Sarkar started his career as an ad-film maker who directed more than a thousand successful commercials for brands like Tata Yellow Pages, ICICI Prudential, Onida, etc. He later also made some successful music videos such as Shubha Mudgal's 'Ab Ke Saawan', Euphoria's 'Dhoom Pichak Dhoom' and 'Maaeri', Sultan Khan's ‘Piya Basanti’, etc. He made his directorial debut with Parineeta in 2005 and thereafter directed movies like Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007), Lafangey Parindey (2010), Mardaani (2014), and Helicopter Eela (2018). 18. Innocent (Actor) (DoB: 04 March 1948, DoD: 26 March 2023)
Veteran Malayalam actor and politician Innocent breathed his last at a private hospital in Kochi at the age of 75. Known for portraying comedic characters on screen, Innocent Vareed Thekkethala primarily worked in more than 700 films including Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, and Hindi films in a career spanning over five decades. Some of his memorable comedy roles were in Malayalam films such as Ramji Rao Speaking, Mannar Mathai Speaking, Kilukkam, Godfather, Vietnam Colony, Nadodikattu, Manichitrathazhu and Kalyanaraman. Some of his unforgettable villainous roles were in films like Keli, Kathodu Kathoram, Kabooliwaala, Gajakesariyogam, Mithunam, Mazhavilkavadi, Manassinakkare, Thuruppugulan, Rasathanthram, Naran and Mahasamudram. He also acted in Hindi films such as Doli Saja Ke Rakhna (1998) and Malamaal Weekly (2006). He was a recipient of many States and Filmfare awards. He was diagnosed with COVID-19, which further led to multiple organ failure. He worked alongside some of the biggest names in Malayalam cinema like Mohanlal, Mammootty, Priyadarshan, Dulquer Salmaan, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Indrajith, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and others. The actor is survived by his wife Alice and son Sonnet.
19. Salim Durani (Actor) (DoB: 11 December 1934, DoD: 02 April 2023)
Veteran cricketer and actor Salim Durani breathed his last in Jamnagar, Gujarat on 02 April 2023 at the age of 88. He was battling cancer for a while and had undergone a proximal femoral nail surgery after fracturing his thigh bone in January 2023. More famous as a cricketer than an actor, Salim Durani was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and played 29 Test matches for India from 1960 to 1973. He is fondly remembered for being the hero of India's series victory against England in 1961–62 and India's maiden victory against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1971. Durani had just a solo Hindi movie release to his credit when he appeared in director B.R. Ishara’s Charitra opposite Parveen Babi in 1973. He was the first cricketer to win an Arjuna Award.
20. Uttara Baokar (Actress) (DoB: 05 August 1944, DoD: 12 April 2023)
Veteran stage, film, and television actress Uttara Baokar breathed her last at the age of 79. The well-known actress who worked in Marathi, as well as Hindi films, passed away on 12 April 2023 after a prolonged illness. She started her acting career in Govind Nihalani’s TV series Tamas in 1988 and Shyam Benegal’s Yatra. Some of her memorable roles in Hindi films were Ek Din Achanak, Sardari Begum, Thakshak, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Dor, Aaja Nachle, 8x10 Tasveer, and Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami, etc. She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for Mrinal Sen's Ek Din Achanak. She is survived by a brother, sister, sister-in-law, and nephew.
21. Pamela Chopra (Singer, Producer, Writer) (DoB: 1938, DoD: 20 April 2023)
Wife of well-known filmmaker Yash Chopra, Pamela Chopra breathed her last in Mumbai at the age of 85. The well-known playback singer, producer, screenwriter, and costume designer was admitted to Mumbai's Lilavati hospital due to pneumonia for the past 15 days and was put on a ventilator by the doctors. Pam Chopra made her debut as a story writer and playback singer in her husband’s film Kabhi Kabhie in 1976 and thereafter crooned songs like Saada Chidiya Da Chamba Ve (Kabhi Kabhie), Jaan Meri Rooth Gayi (Doosara Aadmi), Main Sasural Nahin Jaaoongi (Chandni), Meri Maa Ne Laga Diye (Darr), Meri Banno Ki Aayegi Baaraat (Aaina), and Ghar Aaja Pardesi (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge). She had produced films such as Dil To Pagal Hai and Aaina and appeared in a cameo along with her real-life husband Yash Chopra in the opening song Ek Duje Ke Vaaste from Dil To Pagal Hai. She is survived by producer-director son Aditya Chopra and actor Uday Chopra and daughter-in-law actress Rani Mukerji.
22. Manobala (Writer, Actor & Director) (DoB: 08 December 1953, DoD: 03 May 2023)
Popular actor, writer, director and producer Manobala died on 03 May 2023 at a private hospital in Chennai. As per reports, the popular actor-comedian was hospitalized 10 days ago and was undergoing treatment for a liver-related ailment. He was 69 and is survived by his wife and son. Born in 1953, Manobala worked in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi language films and began his film career in 1979 as an assistant director with Bharathiraja’s Puthiya Vaarpugal. Later he made his directorial debut with the Tamil film Aagaya Gangai in 1982 and followed it up with popular Tamil directorial like Pillai Nila, Sirai Parvai, Oorkavalan and Naina released in 2002. His only Hindi-directed film was the Jeetendra, Rekha, and Raadhika starrer Mera Pati Sirf Mera Hai (1990). He also acted in over 300 films of which some of his memorable performances were in films like Kalakalappu, Tamizh Padam, and Aranmanai, etc. His other memorable performances came in films like Thuppakki, Siruthai, Yaaradi Nee Mohini, Pithamagan, and Ice. His last film as an actor was in Kajal Aggarwal’s Tamil horror comedy, Ghosty. He was well known for his collaboration with the late legendary actor-comedian Vivekh.
23. B.S. Shaad (Writer, Producer & Director) (DoB: 12 November 1943, DoD: 02 May 2023)
Writer, actor, producer, and director, Boota Singh Shaad, popularly known as B.S. Shaad passed away after a prolonged illness at the age of 82 in his native village Sirsa, Punjab on 02 May 2023. Known for his work in Hindi as well as Punjabi language films, B.S. Shaad was a renowned novelist who penned many Punjabi novels like Aadhi Raat Pehar Da Tadhka, Rohi Da Phul, Dil Darya Samundron Doonge, Meri Mehndi Da Rang Udhasand above all Kutiyan Wale Sardar. He marked his debut in the Punjabi film Kulli Yaar Di (1969) which he produced as well as played the lead role. He then went on to direct and produce many Hindi - Punjabi films such as Sacha Mera Roop Hai, Mittar Pyare Nu, Saidan Jogan, Giddha, Vairi, Laali, Nishaan, Himmat Aur Mehanat, Kasam Vardi Kee, Insaaf Ki Devi, Pehla Pehla Pyar, Prem Yog, Smuggler, etc. He never got married and is survived by his nephew and family.
24. Mohan Maharishi (Theatre Director, Actor & Writer) (DoB: 30 January 1940, DoD: 09 May 2023)
Eminent Indian theatre director, actor and playwright Mohan Maharishi passed away at the age of 83 after battling a long illness in Delhi on 9 May 2023. Born in Ajmer in 1940, he was known for directing and writing popular plays like Einstein, Saanp Seedhi, Joseph Ka Mukadma, Deewaar Mein Ek Khirkee Rahati Thi and Ho Rahega Kuch Na Kuch, etc. He graduated from the National School of Drama, New Delhi in 1965, and went on to serve as its director from 1984 to 1986. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 'Direction' in 1992. Besides directing and acting in plays he also acted in Shyam Benegal’s TV series 'Bharat Ek Khoj' and 'Mahakumbh' and not to forget his only Bollywood film Phantom released in 2015.
25. Sarath Babu (Actor) (DoB: 31 July 1951, DoD: 22 May 2023)
Veteran South Indian actor Sarath Babu breathed his last at a private hospital in Hyderabad on 22 May 2023. Born in Amudalavalasa, Andhra Pradesh in 1951, Sarath Babu was hospitalized and was receiving treatment for age-related issues. He was primarily known for his works in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi cinema. He appeared in more than 200 films and made his debut in 1973 with the Telugu film Rama Rajyam and later became popular through the Tamil film Nizhal Nijamagiradhu (1978). He acted in a couple of Hindi movies also, namely – Criminal (1994) and Rocky (2006). His other notable works were in films like Malli Pelli, Gajendra, Payana, Entha Manchivaadavuraa and Seethakoka Chilaka. The late actor who was a recipient of 3 Nandi and 1 Tamil Nadu state film awards is survived by his two wives, actress Rama Prabha and Snehalatha, two sons and two daughters.
26. Aditya Singh Rajput (Actor) (DoB: 19 August 1990, DoD: 22 May 2023)
Actor, model, and casting coordinator Aditya Singh Rajput was found dead at his apartment in Mumbai's Andheri area on 22 May 2023. The Delhi-born 32-year-old actor who acted in TV reality shows, series and films started his career as a ramp model at the age of 17 and thereon featured in various TV commercials and later went on to become a part of the reality show, Splitsvilla 9. He was also part of TV projects including Love, Ashiqui, Code Red, Aawaz Season 9, Bad Boy Season 4, etc. He also starred in films like Krantiveer, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara and U Me Aur Hum.
27. Ray Stevenson (Actor) (DoB: 25 May 1964, DoD 21 May 2023)
Well-known British TV and film actor Ray Stevenson, who played the villainous British governor in S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR passed away on 21 May 2023 at the age of 58. Though the cause of his death is not known but was revealed that he breathed his last while filming the action movie Cassino in Ischia in Italy. Born in Northern Ireland on May 25, 1964, Ray Stevenson started his career by appearing on TV shows in the 1990s and Hollywood films in the 2000s, respectively. He got his first major break in Antoine Fuqua’s King Arthur (2004), where he played Dagonet, one of the Knights of the Round Table. Popular television, theatre and Bollywood actor Nitesh Pandey died of a cardiac arrest at his hotel room in Igatpuri, Nashik, Maharashtra on 24 May 2023. The 50-year-old actor was last seen in the role of Dheeraj Kapoor in Star Plus' hit show Anupamaa and Pyar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyara Pyara. He started his acting career in theatre in the early 90s and appeared in famous TV shows such as Tejas, Manzilein Apani Apani, Saaya, Astitva Ek Prem Kahani, Justajoo and Durgesh Nandini. Veteran Bengali and Hindi actor Amarnath Mukherjee aka Amarnath Mukhopadhyay breathed his last in Mumbai on 25 May 2023 at the age of 89. The 1933-born actor reportedly was suffering from old age-related problems for a long time. Often seen in supporting roles, he started his acting career in Bengali films in the 70s with Megh Kalo alongside Suchitra Sen. He later played crucial roles in films like Kuheli, Chinnapatra, Basant Bilap, Mouchak, Asha-o-Bhalobasha, Raj Nartaki, 7 Days, Amrita, Saathi, Janam Janamer Sathi and Dristee. 31. Sulochana Latkar (Actress) (DoB: 30 July 1928, DoD: 04 June 2023)
One of Bollywood’s most loved on-screen mothers, Sulochana Latkar breathed her last on 04 June 2023 at the age of 94 at a Mumbai hospital. Hailing from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, Sulochana Latkar was suffering from respiratory and other age-related health issues. She began her acting career with Marathi films in the early 1940s and acted in over 300 Marathi and Hindi films of which some of her most memorable performances were in Marathi films such as Sasurvas (1946), Vahinichya Bangdya(1953), Meeth Bhakar, Sangte Aika (1959) and Dhakti Jau (1958) in the lead roles. In Hindi films, she was known for playing the on-screen mother to legendary actors including Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan. Her famous Hindi films include Sujata (1967), Johny Mera Naam (1969), Kati Patang (1970), Majboor (1974), Azaad (1978) and many more.
32. Gufi Paintal (Actor) (DoB: 04 October 1944, DoD: 05 June 2023)
Veteran Indian actor, casting director, and production designer, Gufi Paintal passed away at a Mumbai hospital at the age of 78 due to age-related health issues. Paintal was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai's Andheri suburb where he passed away in his sleep. He was the elder brother of Bollywood actor Paintal, after whom he decided to become an actor. He made his screen debut in Bollywood with the 1978 romantic comedy Dillagi, directed by Basu Chatterjee. He is best known for his role in B.R. Chopra’s TV serial Mahabharat where he played the menacing character of ‘Shakuni’. 33. Mangal Dhillon (Actor, Writer) (DoB: 18 June 1958, DoD: 11 June 2023)
Actor-writer Mangal Dhillon left for his heavenly abode on 11 June 2023 at a hospital in Ludhiana after battling cancer for a few months. His demise has left his fans and industry friends shocked and stunned. Born in Wander Jatana, Faridkot district, Punjab in 1958, Mangal Dhillon started his acting career in theatres before featuring in TV serials like Katha Sagar, Buniyaad, Junoon, Kismat, Mujrim Hazir and Param Vir Chakra. He made his Bollywood debut in Rakesh Roshan’s Khoon Bhari Maang and followed it up by playing the baddie in many popular films such as Dayavan, Bhrashtachar, Amba, Akayla, Zindagi Ek Juaa, Yugandhar, Dalaal, etc. He had written Harmesh Malhotra’s Heer Ranjha (1992) starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. 34. Sharda (Playback Singer & Music Director) (DoB: 25 October 1937, DoD: 14 June 2023)
Celebrated veteran playback singer of the 60s and 70s Sharda Rajan Iyengar passed away due to cancer at the age of 85. Sharda is most remembered for her song ‘Titli Udi’ in Suraj (1966) and was equally popular for singing songs in Telugu, Marathi, English, and Gujarati languages. She was discovered by Raj Kapoor at a function in Tehran at whose behest she met music directors Shankar – Jaikishan who gave her a break in Suraj. Sharda worked with esteemed singers like Mohammad Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Suman Kalyanpur, and sang for the likes of Vyjayanthimala, Saira Banu, Hema Malini, Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz, and Helen on-screen. Some of her other hits were ‘Jaan-e-Chaman Shola Badan’ (Gumnaam), ‘Chale Jaana Zara Thhahro’ (Around The World), ‘Woh Pari Kahan Se Laoon’ (Pehchan) and ‘Baat Zara Hai Aapas Ki’ (Jahan Pyar Miley – 1969) which fetched her a Filmfare Award in 1970. She turned music director in the mid-1970s and gave music for films like Maa Bahen Aur Biwi, Tu Meri Main Tera, Kshitij, Mandir Masjid, and Maila Aanchal.
35. Navroze Contractor (Cinematographer) (DoB: 1944, DoD: 18 June 2023)
Multi-award-winning cinematographer, photographer, and avid motorcyclist Navroze Contractor died in a tragic road accident at Hosur, Karnataka on 18 June 2023 at the age of 79. Born in 1944 in Wai, Maharashtra, Navroze began his career in the late 60s and went on to work in many feature, documentary, short, and experimental films spanning more than five decades. He was known for using all sorts of technology in cinematography besides the latest digital apparatus. His feature film work includes Mani Kaul’s Duvidha, Nachiket, and Jayoo Patwardhan’s 22 June 1897, Percy, Devarakadu, Pehla Adhyay, and Shankar Nag’s Laalach. His other films included Chetan Shah’s Frames and Sanjiv Shah’s Hun Hunshi Hunshilal / Love in the Time of Malaria.
36. Kuljit Pal (Producer, Director) (DoB: 1933, DoD: 24 June 2023)
Veteran producer Kuljit Pal who produced films including Paramatma (1978), Do Shikari (1979), Arth (1982), Ashiana (1986) and Aaj (1987), passed away due to a heart attack after a prolonged disease at the age of 90 on 24 June 2023 at Mumbai. Kuljit Pal started his career as a producer in 1968 with Vaasna and directed his solo film Do Shikari in 1979. He was reportedly the first producer to have given actress Rekha her break but the film was shelved. He also revived Mahesh Bhatt’s directorial career by producing Arth in 1982. He launched his daughter Anamika Pal as a lead actress in Aaj (1987) which also happened to be Akshay Kumar’s debut that went uncredited.
37. Harish Magon (Actor) (DoB: 06 December 1946, DoD: 01 July 2023)
Popular Bollywood actor of the 70s and 80s, Harish Magon who starred in films like Chupke Chupke, Khushboo, Inkaar, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Gol Maal, Namak Halaal and Shahenshah passed away on 01 July 2023 in Mumbai at the age of 76. The cause of his death was not revealed. He was born in 1946 and passed out from Pune’s FTII in 1974, after which he made his acting debut in 1975 in Gulzar’s Aandhi. Besides doing supporting roles he ran Harish Magon Acting Institute in Juhu, Mumbai while was also an instructor at Roshan Taneja's acting school and an active member of CINTAA. His last film as an actor was Uff! Yeh Mohabbat (1997). He is survived by his wife, son Siddharth and daughter Aarushi.
38. Ravindra Mahajani (Actor) (DoB: 1949, DoD: 11 July 2023)

Ravindra Mahajani, who ruled the hearts of many through the late 1970s to the mid-1980s with his impressive acting skills was known as the Vinod Khanna of Marathi cinema. 39. Jayant Sawarkar (Actor) (DoB: 03 May 1936, DoD: 24 July 2023)
Veteran Hindi and Marathi film actor Jayant Sawarkar breathed his last at the age of 87 at a private hospital in Mumbai on 24 July 2023. Born in 1936 in Guhagar, Maharashtra, he was one of the finest actors who did more than 100 Marathi plays and played character roles in more than 60 movies. He was put on a ventilator for nearly 15 days but eventually couldn't survive. A recipient of the President of the 97th All India Marathi Theatre Conference, the Jeevan Gaurav Award by Ambarnath Marathi Film Festival, and the Natvarya Prabhakar Panshikar Lifetime Achievement Award, he started his acting career by featuring in theatre plays at the age of twenty of which some of his famous plays include Aparadh Meich Kela, Apurankank, Alibaba Chalis Chor, Aladdin Jaducha Diva, Aamhi Jagato Befam, and Ekach Pyaala. His notable appearances in Marathi films include Hari Om Vithala, Gadbad Gondhal, 66 Sadashiv, and Bakaal, while his Hindi films were, Ghulam-E-Musthafa, Yugpurush, Vaastav, Ek Hasina Thi, Singham, Rocky Handsome and Sooryavanshi.
40. Nitin Desai (Production Designer) (DoB: 06 August 1965, DoD: 02 August 2023)
Award-winning art director and production designer Nitin Chandrakant Desai died by suicide in his studio in Karjat, Maharashtra on 02 August 2023 at the age of 57. He started his Bollywood career by assisting art director Nitish Roy before going solo with Bhookamp in 1993. He found instant fame when he designed the sets of Vidhu Vinod Chopra's period film, 1942: A Love Story in 1994. His other notable works have been in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Mission Kashmir, Lagaan, Devdas, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Munnabhai MBBS, Swades, Mangal Pandey, and Jodhaa Akbar. He was the recipient of the National Film Award for Best Direction for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Lagaan, and Devdas while his Filmfare Awards for Best Art Direction include 1942: A Love Story, Khamoshi and Devdas. He turned producer with Chandrakant Productions' Desh Devi, a devotional film on the Devi Mata of Kutch and directed Marathi films Hello Jai Hind! and Ajintha.
41. Ardhendu Bose (Actor & Model) (DoB: N.A., DoD: 07 August 2023)

He started his film career as an actor in 1984 in the Malayalam film Nokkethadhoorathu Kannum Nattu and later debuted as a director with the Malayalam movie Ramji Rao Speaking (1989) which was later remade in Hindi as Hera Pheri (2000). His screenwriting debut came with the Malayalam movie Pappan Priyappetta Pappan (1986). His solo Hindi directorial was the superhit Salman Khan – Kareena Kapoor starrer Bodyguard (2011). His last Malayalam directorial was the Mohanlal starrer Big Brother (2020). He is survived by his wife Sajitha and three daughters.

Renowned filmmaker Sanjay Gadhvi, known for directing Dhoom and Dhoom 2, passed away at the age of 57 at his Mumbai residence on 19 November 2023 after suffering a heart attack. He started his directorial journey in 2001 with the film Tere Liye starring newbies which received a lukewarm response. He hit big time after directing Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai(2002) under the Yash Raj Films banner, which was followed by the superhit Dhoom series. He also directed Kidnap (2008), Ajab Gazabb Love (2012), and Operation Parindey (2020) featuring Amit Sadh and Rahul Dev.
56. Rajkumar Kohli (Producer, Director) (DoB: 14 September 1930, DoD: 24 November 2023)
Veteran Bollywood producer and director Rajkumar Kohli passed away in Mumbai on 24 November 2023 after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 93. Rajkumar Kohli was known for his successful multi-starrer's action pot-boilers like Nagin, Muqabla, Jaani Dushman, Badle Ki Aag, Naukar Biwi Ka, Insaniyat Ke Dushman, Aulad Ke Dushman, and Qahar. Before turning director, he successfully produced Hindi films like Lootera, Gora Aur Kala, Moojrim, Shart, Danka, etc., and Punjabi films Main Jatti Punjab Di (1964), Pind Di Kudi (1963) and Sapni (1963). He was married to actress Nishi Kohli while his sons are actors Armaan Kohli and Rajnish Kohli.
57. Gururaj R. J. (Cinematographer) (DoB: 1970, DoD: 27 November 2023)
Hindi film cameraman Gururaj Jois passed away on 27 November 2023 following a heart attack in Bangalore. The 53-year-old cinematographer started his Bollywood career by assisting ace cinematographer Anil Mehta in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Lagaan after which he got his first break as an independent cameraman for Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost in 2003. His other films include Ek Ajnabee (2005), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), Mission Istaanbul: Darr Ke Aagey Jeet Hai! (2008), Gali Gali Chor Hai (2012), and Zanjeer (2013).
58. Dinesh Phadnis (Actor) (DoB: 02 November 1966, DoD: 05 December 2023)
Well-known television actor Dinesh Phadnis passed away at the age of 57 after suffering from multiple organ failure on 05 December 2023. Famous for his portrayal of ‘Fredricks’ in the TV serial ‘C.I.D.’, Dinesh Phadnis breathed his last at Mumbai's Tunga Hospital where he was on a ventilator. He was a part of one of India's longest-running television shows, ‘C.I.D.’ in which he debuted in 1998. He also appeared in a brief role in the mainstream television program 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah' and movies like Sarfarosh and Super 30.
59. Mehmood Junior (Actor) (DoB: 15 November 1956, DoD: 08 December 2023)
Renowned TV and film actor, writer, director and producer, Mehmood Junior died at his Mumbai residence after battling cancer at the age of 67. Mehmood Junior made his acting debut as a child artist in 1967 with the film Gunehgar and Naunihal and went on to act in more than 260 films in 7 different languages and also produced and directed 6 Marathi movies including Maskari, Karmyog, Tulas Aali Ghara, Adla Badli, etc. Some of his notable works in Hindi movies were Brahmachari, Kati Patang, Aan Milo Sajna, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Caravan, Haathi Mere Saathi, Geet Gaata Chal, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Judaai, etc. On TV he acted in shows like Ek Rishta Saajhedari Ka, Tenali Rama and Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara. His last release was The Rise of Sudarshan Chakra in 2023.
60. Ravindra Berde (Actor) (DoB: 1945, DoD: 13 December 2023)
Veteran Marathi and Hindi films supporting actor Ravindra Berde passed away on 13 December 2023 due to a heart attack after battling throat cancer at the age of 78 in Mumbai. In a career spanning over three decades, Ravindra Berde was the elder brother of late actor Laxmikant Berde and had starred in over 100 movies. Some of his notable works in Marathi include Shodh, Khatarnaak, Khilona Bana Khalnayak, etc. He also appeared in several Hindi movies including Ajay Devgn-starrer Singham, Nayak: The Real Hero, and Yeshwant, etc. He is survived by his wife, two children, a daughter-in-law, and a grandkid.
61. Anup Ghoshal (Playback Singer) (DoB: 1946, DoD: 15 December 2023)
Bengali singer Anup Ghoshal, who was best known for the song ‘Tujhse Naraaz Nahin Zindagi’ from the 1983 film Masoom and Bengali hit songs for Satyajit Ray’s musicals, Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (The Adventures of Goopy and Bagha, 1969) and Hirak Rajar Deshe (Kingdom of Diamonds, 1980), died on 15 December 2023 at the age of 77. He was hospitalized for several days before breathing his last at a private hospital in south Kolkata due to old age ailments and multi-organ failure. He was also famous for crooning songs of Kaji Nazrul Islam, Rabindranath Tagore and modern Bengali songs. His notable songs as a playback singer include Fuleswari, Marjina Abdalla and Chhadmabeshi. He is survived by two daughters.
62. Brijesh Tripathi (Actor) (DoB: 1951, DoD: 17 December 2023)
Veteran TV and film actor Brijesh Tripathi died at his residence in Mumbai on 17 December 2023 after suffering a heart attack at the age of 72. Brijesh was a well-known supporting actor in Hindi as well as Bhojpuri movies who made his acting debut in the 1979 Bhojpuri film Saiya Tohare Kaaran. His first Hindi film was the Mithun Chakraborty starrer Taxi Chor in 1980. Throughout his 46-year acting career, he acted in over 250 Bhojpuri and Hindi movies and several regional languages. Some of his popular Bhojpuri films were Hamar Bodyguard Shiva, Driver Raja, Piya Chandani, Ram Krishna Bajrangi, Purab Aur Paschim, Dehati Bahu, Dharam Veer, Rangbaz Daroga, Saugandh Ganga Maiya Ki, Bin Bajawa Sapera, including Pakistan Main Jai Shri Ram, Gharwali Baharwali, and Janta Darbar among others. Some of his popular Hindi films were Mohra, Mrityudaata, Gupt, Vinashak, Ansh, Market, Garv: Pride And Honour, Lakeer, No Entry, Sarhad Paar, Team, etc.
