Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar was not just a vocalist but also a music composer, producer, and actress who was widely considered as one of the greatest singers in the world. Born to a family of musicians and performers Lata belonged to the Mangeshkar family who started singing at the age of 13 for the Marathi movie Kiti Hasaal in 1942. She made her Bollywood singing debut in Aap Ki Seva Mein in 1946 after which she never looked back. Known as the ‘Nightingale of India’, she won many hearts with her mellifluous voice by recording songs in over 36 Indian and foreign languages while her immortal duets with top music composers and legendary male singers like Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh, will be cherished forever. A recipient of numerous national as well as international awards including the Bharat Ratna in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1987 were conferred upon her contribution towards music. Some of Hindi cinemas most memorable songs that she lent her vocals for movies like Mahal (1949), Barsaat (1949), Aah (1953), Shree 420 (1955), Chori Chori (1956), Mother India (1957), Mughal-E-Azam (1960), Guide (1965), Bobby (1973), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Ek Duuje Ke Liye (1981), Silsila (1981), Prem Rog (1982), Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), DDLJ (1995). She was the eldest of four siblings, her sisters Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar are playback singers while her youngest brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar is a music director. She was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai in January 2022 for contracting Covid-19 and was undergoing treatment where she breathed her last on 06 February 2022.
